Would you?

Recommended Posts

I have had this argument with myself a 1,000 times, so I figured I would take it to the people...LOL

Would you breed to a dog that was what you wanted performance wise, but not temperment wise?

What faults in a working dog can you live with, and what cant you live with?

Take care.

Something in me says "no"...but that is cause I keep my dogs as pets and they are quite integrated in my social life, they spend more time traveling and being with humans then they do running hares.

My dogs have to be calm and steady with trains, cats, kids, crowds and such. I could not deal with a nervous high strung disobedient animal.

But if I kept them solemly for hunting...I'd choose the best worker and hope for the best...the pups might have their moms temper anyway...

Gotta have a good temperament imo :victory:

Guy I know took on a spaniel seconhand, scatty as they come, jumps onto the window ledge and barks at everyone as they walk past the house. To me it appears as if his dog has all the faults that would come to you in a nightmare.. .... He had it covered by another spaniel couple of years back and kept a pup, I've seen two of the juveniles from her litter... ..Just as bad as the dam, now he has two spaniels jumping up at the window..

:hmm: Possibly a bit too wide a question, mate? I mean, what good would a Retriever or Spanial be if it had a nerves issue that left it gun shy? That wouldn't matter in a Lurcher. See what I mean?

Bit of 'nervousness', 'shyness' can even be favoured by some people in a lurcher. Tends to make them sneaky. But what good's that in a PP Dog? And so on. I'd really have to know what issue I was dealing with and what I needed the offspring to do before I could answer myself that question.

Have ye any particular tempramental issue in mind? And what work for the resultants?

I'm not all that experienced in this but have been involved in rescues where you end up dealing with the products of ill thought out breeding. Isn't the problem that out of the litter you might keep one or two pups while the others go out into the world with all their potential bad habits installed. Somewhere down the line they either f@ck up and get dumped and end up in rescue if they're lucky or whatever. And some of them end up breeding and then you've got even more pups with potential problems in the world causing problems to people and other dogs and suffering themselves as a result.

Breed from the best, temperament and performance, and leave the rest alone, there's not exactly a shortage of messed up dogs hey? Bear with me if this is crap, I'm new!

Why even test a bad minded dog let alone train it or breed from it. It your emotional attachment worth more than a childs face or hand. Is it cool to have a dog going bezerk at the end of a chain. These are hunting dogs not gaurd dogs. You cannot have both. Let ytour dog loose on someones place and it bites there kid for playing in the trees. Or a timid scared dog havein a nip when the nieghbor is petting it through the fence. Any dog with personality issues should be put down, not rehomed and retraining is B.S. Do not breed culls or make excusses (spelling) for any dogs inadiquassy a cull is a cull is a cull. Just my thoughts as a parent and a working dog owner.

well said rocks , i agree with not rehoming any dodgy dogs . if a dog fu*ks up once it might do it again and then there is another excuse and the wheel of excusses goes on and on until it's a kids face missing
