when buying purse nets

Recommended Posts

a 3ft 6 ins net........yeah not a problem!!!

BUT has anyone ever stopped to ask the width dimension of a net?

simple answer in my opinion is no

with many net sellers on fleabay and on here i have looked at them all and with some you can get a net for £1.60 which seems like a good idea at the time does anyone realize that it comes with a width dimension of 13 meshes and that's it.

the rabbits seem to be getting bigger where we are and im not really sure if a net that is only 13 meshes wide could catch a buck or even a larger doe.

the main idea of a purse net is to have plenty of bag so the rabbit becomes caught in the net with no chance of escape.

the other thing to consider is when working hedgerows is the weight of the net. if the net is too light it will simply blow off and you will not be able to work with them.

ive always used a good quality draw cord and 1 inch galvanized rings to give added weight to the nets to aid with the hedgerow work.

4z nylon turns out to be pretty useless as a purse net but can come into its own when using it in long nets as its light and stops the rabbit dead rather than the heavier 6z which can make the rabbit bounce rather that stop dead.

6,8,10 z nylon is tangle free and heavier but in my opinion alone it is just extra strands of nylon added to the net to make it stronger.

its each to there own when they buy nets but when your in the field and the rabbit bounces out the net you might realize that you need a little extra bag in your net to stop the little beggars

had a few yesterday in those nets bob, very happy wi them. had an encounter with a stoat aswel. my kits were bolting rabbits too :toast: . the nettles are still up mind, some setts i was just running them through as i had no gloves and didnt want to make a racket. the albino jill kit bolted 3 on her maiden voyage down. the hob bolted 5/6 but in the setts i hadnt netted, he was also hunting in piles of rocks i know the hide in and bolted 2 for the dog. the runt is shy to go down and only when i had them all down would she play ball. give it a few weeks and i'll be hitting the place properly.

nets were superb didnt find a hole they couldnt cover, there will be some but as i said they are about as perfect for my permissions as i can get.
