man o kent 269
Mornin all, another novice ques im afraid. My patt bitch is 4 and hasnt had any jabs since her initial ones as a pup. She is used to mooching about and mixing with the livestock, but as i am hoping to start ratting with her soon, do you think she ought to have a booster jab from the vet to protect her from lepto, or will she have built up antibodies from the first vacs? What are your thoughts?

ruby16 80
i was told long ago by a vet i know that the injections they receive as a pup are a living virus and they dont need boosters after that, but you will have to make your own mind up, i personaly dont give mine boosters its just lining the vets pocket. showmespeed 36
I do it only as a pup. I don't know what regulations are in your country but the only thing I do after pup status is the rabies. It isn't seen much here in the states but a good immune system can't beat it so that is all I do. Pups I do 6 week, 12 week, and then 6 month 7 in 1 shots that I can buy at the local feed store and nothing else but that except for the rabies like I said.
kabar 14
Mine are vaccinated when pups, then one booster a year later then that's it. If your worried about Leptospirosis this can be given as a vaccination on its own. If I remember right though I'm sure I was told it only lasts for six months,
sallie 67
Mine are done with a booster every year
B.P.R 2,798
I personally wouldn't mess about when it comes to protection for the mutts. What's a booster? £30? £40? For peace of mind and could keep your dog alive. A friend of mine had to watch his pup die unknowingly until he found out it had parvovirus. Didn't see it personally but he said it was cruel. Another friend (both members) had a terrier that fell ill. Not sure of the exact circumstances but his dog had to have emergency op/ treatment and that was because the boosters wasn't up to date. We was going to use the said terrier for rafting but gave it a miss until we were sure the booster had taken effect. I'm sure rats Carry a desease, not sure what it's called.... WEILS DISEASE??? Better safe than sorry IMHO. £30-40 is nothing when your sat with a dying dog.
Good Man 196
Their are so many different strains of lepto when rat hunting, that the dog vaccines don't cover, so whats the point, after the pup has its full jabs, that will do, other wise you are helping the vet get the latest model sports car for him/her self... MissRhianL 70
I think its touch and go with boosters, as alot of people got different views on having boosters each year for the dogs. Personally i dont bother with boosters i have a 7yr, 4.5yr, 9 month and 8.5 month old dog and all they have ever had is their first jab and thats about it really, theres alot of people around who tells u that u should jab them with a booster and you will hear another lot tell you they dont bother. One thing i will tell you and to remind others that by having a jab doesnt necesarily mean the dog wont catch a virus or pick up a disease, no jab is 100% unfortunately its handy to have what it does is inject the dog with a tiny amount of certain bacteria from different viruses so the body learns to fight against it, so hopefully if they do manage to pick up something the body should respond abit more better as its been fought before but obviously in a smaller amount. I think its a personal opinion whether u choose to give her the booster or not, i think longs if she is looked after she should be fine
