Springer chasing game HELP!!!

Hi peeps, I just need a bit of HELP! I have a springer spaniel bitch 13 months old, it works well and is 100 percent obedient , until somthing gets up out of a ruff or bush in front of her, then she chases it and completely ignores me when I whistle or shout her. Please will some one help me as it's got to stop, many thanks lew

And don't get the cheap one or the dog will figure out that if it keeps running it will get out of range of it!!

 

Anyway from my own experience with a collar they work very well but can introduce other issues which might be harder to cure than the one you have now. If you are too heavy handed with it you might dampen the dog's drive for hunting or make it nervous so tread carefully and get a trainer to go through the conditioning phase otherwise the dog isn't going to know why it is getting nipped.

 

One thing I can say about my dog is that he wont chase squirrels after he got zapped a couple of times.

The dog is not 100% obedient! 'The One' has given great advice, you need to go back to basics. I must admit that I have NO experience of personally using remote trainers, but I have come across Dogs where the device was incorrectly used and left the creatures ruined. A better way would be to find a trainer with a rabbit pen and to use those facilities once you have instilled the basics.

Thats what i was thinking over use that collar and the dog wont hunt anything up

Yep used properly they can be a good tool but lets face it if the dog was trained properly from the start without skipping the important bits then people like myself wouldn't have to use them.

 

There is a lesson to be learned here and it's one that I will never forget because I hated having to use the bloody thing and secondly they aren't stupid and know when it is and isn't on so you might be stuck with having your dog wearing a collar for years and people asking about it etc

Practise the STOP whistle, did this with my springer and eventually it all clicked into place, main thing is you must be consistent during training.

Remote trainers used properly are really good, why keep saying they are useless if used incorrectly ? that applies to just about everything. I have found after basic training the remotes reinforce commands particularly at distance and with a high drive dog.

Start off on low shock settings until you reach the level required.

I have the Canicom 1500 which I can recommend although expensive I have had it for several years and has been used on several out of control dogs with total success and without leaving any issues.

Sounds like you need to get her steady to game, try and book a session in a rabbit pen with a trainer. Reel her in a bit in an environment were you can get out after her if she chases.
