Hi guys it’s that time again a large batch for sale.
just a rundown of dimensions and materials used.

The blade is 5.8mm thick o1 tool steel.
Professionally heat treated in Sheffield to a tested hrc 57-59
Laser engraved in Sheffield.
Hand finished in every other way, each one is subtly different.
it has a saber grind, I’ve done the grind higher to get a finer cross section for what I believe is a better edge for the purpose of field craft
.

It’s totally over engineered so should last a very long time and some abuse in the field!!
Dimensions are.

For the regular fieldcrafter.
9.5cm cutting edge
12.5cm handle
it takes 4 x 4mm pins and 1x8mm lanyard.

For the limited edition lads and ladies (only 20 will be made)

Same steel as above

With 8cm cutting edge 11cm handle. it has 4x2mm pins and a 7mm lanyard tube.

The handle materials are black and olive green G10. Black linen micarta , green linen micarta , green canvas micarta and black and green dymond wood , they are all super tough and look really cool

I use a two ton rated 2 part apoxie to glue them .
Shaped and finished by hand and given a satin finish with a specialist abrasive.

'Info on the sheaths is 3.5mm died through shoulder.
Double Stitched with 4 strands of pre waxed nylon thread.
Riveted belt loop 3.5mm welt glued and stitched by hand died black and waxed.
Should last a very long time!

There are currently two limited edition lads and ladies models finished they are just a reduced sized version of the regular, the design is really flexible so this was a no brainer, and there must be dads or fella’s with kids or a Mrs. that would appreciate a mini version of yours!!

They fit the same sheath but you maybe want a little tag of a lanyard for pulling them out the sheath I don’t know I can do it comfortably.

They are finished in g10 or canvas micarta.

This is a first come first serve sale. no cheques will be accepted just direct bank transfers PayPal or cash sent recorded delivery.

They usual get to you the next day after payment is received but weekends sometimes stop that!

They are.....

£80 without sheath for the regular, free uk first-class recorded delivery.

£60 for the lads and ladies without sheath, free uk first-class recorded delivery.

Or £120 for the full knife with sheath (regular) free uk first-class recorded delivery.

And £100 for the finished knife with sheath (for the lads and ladies) free uk first-class recorded delivery.

  • 2 weeks later...

just a sneak preview of what iv been making this week .

It might make a nice change from fieldcrafters ?

image_zps606deef0.jpg

theres high class damascu/pattern welding AND theres............

image_zps7f6480ab.jpg

World class :)

I will do a montage/video to music of the whole process in a day or so, but until then I will leave it at that.

Im so please with all of it but the one tight patterned billet is making me feel pretty smug.

Details ??

Ok there sc70 carbon spring steel an 15n20 laminated forge welded to 120 layers then two different versions of ladder pattern. One larger than the other.

I have 4 billets two with stick tangs have 9"lengths for blades aprox 2" wide and 6-8mm thick. And two smaller billets one is 240 layer ladder pattern that will be the guard of the tighter patterned knife.

They will be fighting knives I hope, one will defe be a serious Bowie.

Cost???

They stand me in the hundreds already!!

But skill should never be cheap :)

Just a side note, I do not take commissions on this sort of thing I just make what I want to as an art form. They cost what they cost and take as long as they take to make.

All the best, matt

Thank you , I will try to add more pics today .

Iv not mentioned it but this lot are power hammered , I now rent a workspace in a professional forge when I make anything "forged"

It's far better for me ( healthy wise ) and there are the tools I need to get the heavy work done more accurately and consistently .

I still need a couple of thousand investment in it to get so I have everything to hand and of a grade that can cope , but it's a huge improvement so far.

Funny thing is the really delicate patterns like twist and feather still have to be done mostly by hand so there's never a magic tool to do everything .

Iv got to find a new air feed for my forced air burner as it sucked up a stone and tore off all the blades on the fan .....

My fault entirely but another expense.

I have no idea pretty expensive . Iv been keeping a record of cost to me so I will way it all up at the end .

Iv got 2 other folks really interested also . If I can cover costs and make a little money for me I can carry on making the stuff , I just can't do anything as cheap as I was, I almost cried when I did the working out for fieldcrafter-uk at how much I had been loosing !

The loose plan is high grind with small exposed tang before guard , Damascus guard forged and probably with file work . Possibly ebony handle and iron pummel (etched ) black leg hanger sheath with exotic (dark or black) inlay .

Laser engraved makers mark ( under my name)

I'm going to pool all my skills and tricks into these pattern welded knives .

I want to make some legacy knives , things that go up in value over time !

This is one my son has had on the go for a while. The wrought iron is a piece i pulled out of a skip, just thought it was mild steel rod, only realized when it was being forged into a pair of tongs. The tongs got abandoned and the wrought iron put to a better use. The blade is leaf spring from a series 2 landy.

Recently finished this knife. I made it for a "knife in the hat" draw over on EM forum.
The style is Kiridashi so ground on one side only with the other flat like a chisel. Ideal for cutting leather or anything else where you would run the blade along a straight edge.

This blade is made from motorbike chain hand forged on to a leaf spring core. I have experimented a few times with chain Damascus but this is the cleanest weld yet, not perfect but it has character. Very hard to eliminate all the voids in the chain beating it by hand...even though i spent probably half a day hammering away on it.... I will make a press one day.
I had a smaller knife in mind when i started out but wanted to maximize the lump of rough forged "Damascus" I ended up with so it determined the size & shape of the final blank.
The blade is 7.5 inches and handle  approx 4.5 so overall something like a 12" Knife.
Handle is Scottish red stag and the bolster/ pommel are stacked brass & copper soldered together.

Heard a while back mention of sharpening with MDF wheels but never really paid much attention. I recently thought i would give it a go and turned up a quick MDF wheel on the face-plate of my wood-working lathe. I clamped a makeshift guide to the back of the lathe and worked with the wheel turning away from me. I was blown away by the results! Super sharp paper slicey edge straight off the wheel.

Decided a dedicated MDF wheel sharpener was high on the list of must haves so started gathering bits. I was lucky enough to pick up an old 8" Makita bench grinder on ebay for £25. Everything else is made from scrap bits so that was all the outlay for the build.

I took the guards off the grinder, swapped the switch and the power cable around so the on/off switch is effectively now on the back so the grinder can be operated with the wheels running away from you.

The knife clamp is made from an old door hinge welded to a bit of rod off of some other power tool, hence the nice grippy knob on the end. A 6mm hex bolt through the hinge clamps the knife in place. A cutting of hex bar slides up and down to alter the angle of grind and locks in place with another allan bolt.

Once set up to the desired angle the blade can be sharpened on both sides and both wheels quickly without altering anything.

The MDF wheels are loaded with grey polishing compound and jewelers rouge respectively.
