no not necessary mate , but the equipment needs to be kept some where and better out of site in the sump tank , there are vary many benefits of a sump tank tho mate , giving much more scope to control the water quality and means to filter it , also can vastly increase the water volume of the tank which will make it much more stable ,in many aspects, increases the surface area of the water to aid in gass exchanges etc

Yep makes sense.......im a Discus fancier so familiar with the Ro and hma carry on !.......Just dont know much about protein skimmers and suchlike i wondered if a sump was a necessity because of that or if they was just used for the same reason as any other tank.....cheers

So you need to have special water? I thought you just added chemicals to it. Seems a lot more hassle than I first thought. Can't you just buy that water from somewhere lol

You can buy RO water yes......down here its a fiver for 25 litres...............i do just over 100 litre water changes every other day..........you work it out ;) .......if your going to do it,do it right from day 1 and get a proper kit plumbed in.

on the forum i mentioned there are alot of people seriously into the reef keeping , the money they spend is unbelievable , it consumes their entire lives lol there were some on there building serious extensions on their houses and having costom built tanks made insitu that would not look out of place at a zoo lol ,, vary impressive but silly i think for the average working man

if i was you tho i would not let the cost put u off giving it a go as with most things where there is a will there is a way , if you take your time to learn all that is needed and are patient to pick up the bargains from the classifieds sections of the forum then it would not be so bad to get a decent tank up and running and then develop on it over time , this i think is a much better way to do it than just throwing coin at it , cheap or old equipment can be replaced with better over time , and all the corrals can be purchased quite cheap as long as you have the patience to grow them on from small pieces , much more of an achievement this way i think , rather than just going out and buying the best and most developed specimens and basking in the glory of some one else hard work

and as for the RO water , its not as bad as it sounds , a filter unit could cost about £50 quid second hand and a couple of empty barrels and your away to go

Maybe one for the future, the daughter was mithering for a tropical tank for christmas ,as luck would have it someone i gifted two kits to mentioned they were selling a full set up 200l tank,cabinet,hood,2 large external fluval/eheim power filters, pump, lighting even gravel, bog wood etc £150 so bought that.So shes got an early pressie(keeps her of the computer :icon_redface: )as we are now stocking it its rekindled the interest for me :boogy: I used to keep breed cichlids/fancy coldwater fish to boost the pocket money as a kid  not been in an aquatic shop for years, the tank prices have gone through the roof :icon_eek: but the fish prices seem pretty much the same!some of those marine fish are outstanding. As I say maybe in the future  ATB Dave

Not a fan of reptiles and spiders like, just can't trust them not to bite ya!

As for fish, i've got a 90 litre with a Tiger Barb shoal and some Panda Corydora and a 200 litre 'Amazon style' with Cardinal Tetras, Neons, & Peppered Corydora, looks bare at the moment like. I know they're only 'basic' level fish but they're easy to maintain which does for me  i did have about 25 guppies, most bred myself, all died :cray: soft cnuts.

I have seen a British coast marine tank on Tropical Fish Forums...amazing. Apparently all the fella had was a filter, no other specialist equipment, water changes involved a trip to his local beach every so often and him and his son scoured the rock pools for new critters, excellent idea but i'd still manage to fcuk that one up

'Hartlepool coast in a tank' hmm, i'd have to include sewage and litter for it to be authentic :D

I always kept snakes n lizards, was more into the snakes than lizards though, had a cracking 8ft boa and watching it eat the size of rats it needed was something else, remember 1st time feeding it n nearly shit meself the fuker came right out the tank n took it from me in a flash. Milk snakes were my fav though but dont have the time for them these days.
