Millet 4,497
Ive had allsort's over the year's here's what i can remember.. .. Garter snake's/black rat snake/corn snake/calafornia king snake/red tail boa X common boa/iguana's/ geko's/terrapin's/salamander's/frog's/stick insect's...i found they got pretty boring after a while especially the bigger one's that only ate one per fortnight.. Also kept cold water and tropical for many year's..kept freshwater eel's and for (Redpawn) i've also kept Perch which where real nervy little fooker's and messed the tank up pretty quick.. I did progress onto tropical Marine which cost a fortune to set up and after 2yr's of maturing the tank levelled out and the caribbean living rock come to life which was brilliant...something new seemed to happen every time i sat and watched the tank which was more often than watching tv.. I also kept a native marine tank with fish and crustaceans collected from the local rock pool's but that was boring to look at compared to the tropical marine and i sharp got rid of it.. If i ever had the time and money to waste i would love to set a 8ft x 2ft x 2ft tropical marine tank up with a wall of living rock right across the back of the tank..i have seen such a tank once in a reception room and it was something else.. RubyTex 1,957
Millet - did you use any specialist equipment in your native marine tank? That other fella said all he used was a bog standard filter?!? I'd like one but as you say, it's not a patch on a tropical marine tank

That other fella said all he used was a bog standard filter?!? I'd like one but as you say, it's not a patch on a tropical marine tank I suppose a native tank could be nice if you find the right species to put in there.. free to collect which is a bonus and once you get sick of a chosen species you can stick it back in the sea.. As for filteration a standard undergravel set up will do but i prefer the external canister filter's as you don't disturb the tank as much when thety need a routine clean.. If you do want to set a native marine up you need to start of with a heater in there like a tropical to speed the process up of maturing the filter's..YOU have me thinking now..
Millet 4,497
The more I read about marine fish, I want one. So the rock actually grows? If it's fresh rock from the caribbean or where ever tropical it came it will be bought looking like a lump of rock you would through away..but dont be mistaken as it will be full of living polyps and planktonic orginism's attatched to it and within crack's and hole's..if the tank is mature the rock can be placed in there and no end of thing will grow from it..the tank i used to have had a friendly white crab in ther that come from a piece of living rock..
