skycat 6,173
The only time kennel cough is dangerous is to dogs with weak lungs: can turn into pneumonia, or stressed, old or dogs with little or no immune system, such as dogs on steroids (prednisalone). Most dogs cough a bit, are a bit lethargic, may have a temperature, may or may not cough up phlegmy stuff. Most of mine have had it at one time or another as I live very near a large animal shelter where it is pretty much endemic. If the dog doesn't want to eat much cos of a sore throat then feed sloppy food it can swallow easily. Absolutely NO running either in play or working until at least a fortnight after the dog has stopped coughing. It is very contagious so keep the dog or any of your other dogs away from dogs, especially puppies or bitches in whelp. In my experience it is only a problem if you try and run a dog hard when its lungs are still inflamed: can cause permanent damage. Knew someone who coursed a dog when it hadn't quite got over it and the dog's stamina was never the same again and she coughed after each run. Sometimes the cough can linger for ages: use the remedy Socks suggested: I know it works as that's how I've treated my dogs in the past. Dawn B 212
Heres my advice, based on boarding upto 116 dogs at any given time and with my own. Kennel cough is very indescriminate it can and does affect some dogs and not others, dogs living in the same house will not all automatically get it. Whenever I see kennel cough, I treat with anti-biotics, I didnt once and had a dog left with pneumonia and a damaged heart, never again. I also give a course of anti-biotics to the other dogs in the house, I, and still now have never had another dog infected with it having been given anti-biotics. They wont harm your dog but in my experience have prevented further infection to other dogs. I treat all the dogs that get KC in the kennels with anti-biotics too, but in that case, not all the boarders, just the affected ones. I find dogs treated with anti-biotics get well much quicker than those treated without or with nothing. Dawn. Edited June 13, 2007 by Dawn B
socks 32,253
dawn dogs treated with antibiotics will heal slightly quicker than dogs treated other ways ... but i hate giving my dogs anti biotics for every illness out there and if i can get away with not using them i will ... but at the end of the day its the dogs health that matters and we should treat out own dogs with what we feel is the best for them :thumbs-up: :thumbs-up: :thumbs-up: .......... MikeTheDog 153
Dont fart around with old wives tales, just get it to the vet, surely the dogs worth that much. Had a dog with KC once, took it to vet and they confirmed what I already knew. I only wanted to ask the same question as asked here, vet gave dog a jab and a packet of Synulox and took a lot of dosh from me .. They wouldn't give me anything to give the other dogs as a precaution without seeing them first. Gave them all kiddies benylin and honey ...Oh and changed my vet.. I dont like giving anti-biotics for no reason Socks, but having KC turn into pneumonia and being left helpless, when it could of been prevented, has left me in no doubt of the seriousness of this disease, and what it can do if it isnt treated properly. Personally, (and its my choice alone,) I always treat with anti-biotics, I respect everyone else's decision to treat their dogs as they see fit. Dawn.
