Best time for rabbits?

Recommended Posts

Thanks to all who replied, especially Haymin who has sorted me some lamping gear at considerable expense to himself and renewed my faith in humanity!

Billy Whizz - what type of dog are you using now, how big is it? and what type will you replace it with, what do you consider to be a good bunny dog?

Wirral countryman - you're bang on there. Dog had her first proper run on the maglite :icon_redface: last night. Nice flat field, short grass and a single tree in the middle with a bit bush around its base, saw the glint of a bunny's eye at the base of that tree and slowly walked up to it, dog off lead by my side. About six feet away bunny moved, dog noticed, bunny took off from the other side of the tree blocking my view. A second later, I get the lamp back on the dog by a hedge 20 meters away, having just lost its quarry. She opens up and starts hunting on, I call her back and a minute or so later she returns. So no more hunting off the lead for her until she gets the hang of the lamp. I'm training her by turning the lights off in the house, throwing her training dummy, which I've covered in a hare skin, then shine torch on the dummy and release dog. She runs straight down the beam to the dummy and retrieves. If I shine the lamp a couple of meters off the dummy, she runs in to the beam first then looks for the dummy. So I'm hoping she'll get the idea this way, then when she finds a bunny at the end of the lamp it'll all click in to place for her. I'm also taking her ferreting soon, which I hope will help as she will have to use her eyes instead of nose when waiting for bunnies to bolt. I'll have a search on here for topics about hunting on, but if you have any advice to add here, feel free.

Best wishes and happy hunting to you all.

Nice dog, I could see that being a good all rounder. I have 3/4 apbt 1/4 staff, he's getting on now though at 13 and had a surprising amount of pace in his younger days.

Wish I'd had a pup off him, very stable temp. His hips are going though, this last year he has slowed right down, struggles to get up stairs or into the car.
