judging terriers/lurchers

Recommended Posts

i'm not saying that a judge should not judge a friends dog, after all we all go to these shows and know many people, and i for sure would not be offended if a friend didn't put my dog up, i'm not there for that game.

what i am saying is that a judge should withdraw his own dogs from a show, so that there is an absolute unbiased winner/champion

There are Judges who would rather fall out with "friends" than corrupt their integrity; and frankly, without these genuine judges, the show scene would be f****d !!

Cheers.

A mate wouldn't put your Integrity on the line, :hmm: If the dog to be Judged,is anything related to your own stock (NEAR) shouldn't be put infront of you ! I.M.O.

But since the shows seem to attract the same People & Dogs it will Happen...The definition of the word F***ED can be Contentious

I'm one of these extroverts who LOVES judging !! I must admit, I prefer judging Whippets, as there is a "standard" to work to, rather than with Lurchers, where it is simply the Judges preference ! Of course, if like me, you like rough coated dogs, you MUST have the integrety to put up a smooth coated dog, if it is the better specimen ! Same with size...... how many times have we seen the under 23"; literaly and metorphoricaly, overshadowed by the bigger dog ? Very rarely will you see a top class Beddy/Whippet win over a mediochre Deerhound/Greyhound, but it's only in one persons eyes that's the better dog... the JUDGE !! I've been thanked and slated for my judging...and fair does; I've moaned about judges when I used to show my dogs........ but at the end of the day, if you want to show your dogs.... you need shows AND Judges; so before complaining.... would you do their job ???????

Cheers.

in all the time ive had running dogs ive never heard or seen a judge show their own dog .when judging i have very often had to judge a mates dog but thats what you do judge the dog and nothing else .i know people moan about certain ones winning a lot but thats what certain people do they do keep showy good looking lurchers .mainly for showing .now certain ones might not like this but at the end of the day its up to the individual what type of lurcher they keep and what they keep it for ,they pay the dogs keep so get to choose what they do with it and as long as its looked after which most of the show ones are does it really matter a toss.i just got in after a few hours out with my bitch and 9 rabbits later wouldnt swap[ her for all the show champions out there but that doesnt mean i cant admire and like a nice looking show champion ..the only ones that get up my back and there are a lot out there are the ones who say their dogs do this and that and the nearest they get to any quarry is when they put a dvdon lol.rant over .

I have judged a couple of shows during the summer and i have judged mates dogs, but Ireland being a lot smaller and you see the same people at shows all the time ,if we didn't judges friends dogs the rings would be almost empty ,some friends did get placed but only because their dogs deserved it,but the 2 dogs i put up as champions where not the type of dog i would keep my self,a reckon alot of people thought ,i would of picked large rough coated wheaten types but no ,1 was a whippet x and the other was a large smooth dog

I have no doubt if I entered my dogs infront of my friends if they deserved it they would get it and if not they wouldn't, but I just choose not to do it because if they did get placed it would be a big conspiracy. There are friends chart then there's proper friends, some you see at the odd show etc, I'm talking about ones you hunt with, shoot with, family member etc, you should meet put your dog under a close friend by that's just my opinion I wouldn't do it.

The old argument about we picked the winners before they were in etc can e a common occurrence mate because let's be honest if you see a wee wooly stumpy dog standing next to a specimens of a terrier it's not rocket science is it? Too many people judge from outside the ring without getting hands on a terrier, if you judged a show your thoughts would mate surprise yourself when you get hands on.

Quite agree grant_c : Many's the time I've like the look of a dog from a distance, but when you get up close you can find soft muscles, long claws, dirty teeth, fleas etc etc. Some people would argue that it is a beauty show, and that the bits you don't see from a distance shouldn't matter, but IMO the condition and cleanliness of the dog are part and parcel of that beauty. I once judged a show where the most obviously beautiful dog was, on close examination, literally riddled with fleas, to the extent that it's coat looked darker from a distance than it really was simply because of the amount of flea dirt on the hair!!! When I told the owner I'd have given his bitch first place if it hadn't been for the fleas, he moaned about it and told me I should have been judging the dog, not the fleas! :icon_eek::laugh:

never been one for judgeing up the lead my mates would`nt show in front of me or me them -- i`ve not judged a show in a few years now for a couple of reasons -- small entrys in shows being one and the other the poor standard of dogs being put in front of you ..and mardy sore losers .the day i had to stand at the back of my car and justify to someeone why his 23 show winning terrier only got reserve champion on the day was the day i gave it bollox --a lot of people come on here moaning about shows and judges - if they bug you that much dont go ... and stick your name up to judge a show its not an easy thing to step under them ropes for a few hours ... a few year back i went to show my terriers the lurcher judge failed to show although i`d never juged a lurcher show and with no one else willing to stand in faced with calling the show off i stepped i know my way round a lurcher i let the mrs show the terriers most people said i`d done a great job and thanked me and the mrs won the terriers -- some woman said to her your a cheat you only won the terriers because your old man was the lurcher judge -- funny folk these show people :D

Well, that was very good of you to step in, but there's no way you should have judged your own terriers: even if they were the best there on the day, it looks bad to all onlookers. If you hadn't been prepared to leave your dogs in the vehicle, you shouldn't have offered to judge. Just my opinion, but one I know that many will share.
