Carrying equipment into the field

Recommended Posts

yeah we do a lot of hiking unless we are doing some city digs which I have been doing more since it is deer/turkey season and don't want to have to kill some gun hunter for shooting a dog of mine. But a normal hunt we go for 2-4 miles in a day easily hitting sets so we take as much with us as possible without wearing ourselves out. I will post my setup tomorrow.

Soft in the head. That description fits me, or I'd find something to do that pays better.

The last time I went out we:

1. Walked between a wet soybean field and a ditch and got soaked to the armpits within five minutes of leaving the truck.

2. Walked in a cane brake with cane 15' tall growing on about 6" centers.

3. Dug one four footer and got soaked again, this time with sweat.

4. Walked through a patch of ragweed that was about 12' tall, again so thick Superman would have been winded by the time he got through.

5. Watched the dog enter an earth beside the creek and tracked him with the box between 10' and 12' deep. Thank Diana he never opened.

6. Walked the rest of the way around the wet soybean field, and found ourselves in the wonderful position of needing to walk through those beans to get back to where we needed to be. That like to have killed us. We had to take turns breaking trail.

7. By the time we got back to the trucks, I figure we had walked a little over four miles.

8. Went to another spot, got the dog out, put her on the ground and had a nice little three footer that the lurcher finished for us.

Were it not for the number 8's now and again, I'd check myself in and get my head examined. I'm sure they'd find it on the soft side.

I'm not the man I used to be. Thing is, I'm starting to wonder if I ever was?
