Depends what you want bird and there's a lot of difference between the odd rabbit and a good shift

well had some great nights with Bryn who is a 1x collie x grey , lots of 20s in a night, best night 28 from 32 . My 1x gsd x grey dog pup should do the same both these xs have good stamina + good strike

Not one of them is a Lurcher bd

touche'..........point taken :icon_redface:

how do work that out .?? a lurcher is a x of a (working dog = collie, gundog, terrier, to a running dog ) a 1x is the start of any line of lurcher, and regards litter wastage, any dog with half running dog should catch a rabbit and thats the quarry today, even collies, gsds, labs can the odd rabbit, so stick 50% greyhound to it carnt see they will that much wastage .!!

I think the point he's making Ray is technically the breeds mentioned were long dogs not lurchers.

true Jai , they are  just was pointing out any 1x with 1/2 greyhound in its mix will catch rabbits , so its not a wastage .

Yes Bryn does well but look at his shape, would a dog of collie size and stamp catch as many?

well thats is true , he is very racey+fast for a 1x . And prob heavy type 1x might not do as well, my pup 1x gsd x grey wouldnt when older, but still got get few with but not as many as Bryn, .!

That's what I was referring to as wastage, the dogs that throw heavily one sided. I know these can have a use but they are not the intended outcome

yes the heavier type might be like that, but they can do other things where extra size comes in handy on more than just rabbits .!!

Throw into the discussion the upbringing of the pups - nature vs nurture if you like. You can have the best lines in the world but if you don't work it right then may well be classed wastage.

Also suspect different crosses will have different needs in upbringing...discipline / understanding / tolerance of errors of judgement ( human error that is ....)

i think it really depends on how you define wastage? using the collie x as an example, they're bred to be allrounders able to do a wee bit of everything general potfillers, one that threw to the collie would make a decent net, ferreting and lamping (depending on the ground) but no way could it be called a coursing dog or able to take bigger quarry (preban of course mods) on a regular basis, there are those who breed and work the reverse 3/4 to get such a hound so to these guys it wouldn't be wastage, similar could be said of the ones that throw to the greyhound perhaps they'd struggle a bit with the long / gate network, maybe a wee bit to full on for the lamp but if they got behind a hare or (pre ban again mods) were pitted against bigger quarry maybe their natural attributes would come to the fore. i think it's down to our attitudes and expectations, hancock wouldn't sell a 1st x to someone wanting a hare dog for example, it's kinda the same with the nature v nurture even in a good handlers hands it wouldn't matter how much conditioning, high protien food and wide open fenland you threw at a 1st x it's never gonna win a coursing comp and a moocher type hunter can't put brain power, willingness to please / learn or herding instinct into a greyhoundy types head
