Aaron Proffitt 142
All, Their was an article on here at one time that was posted by a member touting the benefits of using the .177 over .22 . It was a pretty informative read, actually . Does anybody remember it or what happened to it ? I'd like to save it for some of the info. Aside from that, I am curious why you guys would use anything but .177 ? What I mean is , since I'm not restricted to ft. lbs. the way you guys are , it's a pretty simple matter of gaining energy by switching to a heavier pellet . No rocket science there . But if you're needing to stay under 12 ft. lbs, then why would you use anything other than .177 ? Edited September 13, 2012 by Aaron Proffitt Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
.177s have a tendency to overpenetrate. Although they are flatter shooting, when shooting small quarry, they can sometimes go clean through, and not kill outright. It's only a personal thing, but I prefer the thwack of a .22, knowing it kills quickly and knowing where the pellet is. 1 Quote Link to post
Aaron Proffitt 142
Hmmm...hadn't thought of that, Walshie. Well played. Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
And I use a springer, so increasing the pellet weight actually lowers the energy. Horses for courses I guess. Quote Link to post
Buster321c 1,010
It matters not , what it is . Its more a case of where it goes ........... What im saying is there are pro`s and con`s to each . The MOST IMPORTANT thing is pellet placement . Know your rig and your ok . 2 Quote Link to post
BLACK-GUN 94
I prefer my Theoben .20 than my .177 Quote Link to post
Aaron Proffitt 142
.20 ? I keep hearing about .20's and I like the concept, just not the availability of ammo. Quote Link to post
ghillies 209
yes the article was in the airgun world.. had a picture of two pigions with the drop on each .177 and .22 for comprison. i use .177 and have dun for nearly 30 years.. tried .22 etc abd nope still in .177 at legal limits. truth is it makes diddly squot in under 12fp's... its what suits you. once you go fac then things change, its all down to 'useable' tragectry 'arcs' and what you want to do, or the desired affect. i watched some show on the foreign legions history, they were always slated for there .177 airgun girly aproach, untill they kicked ass with some awsome's... they selected calibers and guns for what theyd do in particiclar invireoment, like wide open desert a 100 yard massive caliber was actualy shit.. they shot you long before you got near enough, etc etc, deepest jungle tereine they chose some dweeby girly caliber...but wiped out the oposision because well, you couldnt see no more than 50-100 yards on a good day but the over penatrasion helped etc etc etc. every one reeds up and makes an armchair assesment (a bit like the goverment lol) truth is there isnt many people with unlimited resourses and a good back round based on in the feild know how and exsperese... .22 is good when it has the velosity to it, .25 is better when it has the velosity to it, but!! yes but lol, when theres a power limit you cant have that velosity.. so the other 'benifits' come into play, e.g. arthritict hands are not going to be piddly diddling about on a .177 pellet and a tiney barrel port hole. in the head its dead... at range.. well, can you hit it to start with, if you can we're back to in the head its dead, the marginal better .22 is more exspencive from buying the gun to using it for a ten year averaged calculasion.. yes theres a greeter drop/steep arc.. but theres a few set ups that make a .177 undesireable, sooooo the set up makes ayet another minute diference.. distance..overpenatrasion (then you'd be using calculasions graghs etc to lower the power set the scope and hit the target with no overpenatrasion..in .22 or .177 or what ever you best at using). i beleive .20 is the happt medium between the two... but any one in the know who sais that usualy adds if you can get a good pellet barrel match... but the same applies, in the head its dead. you'll never know the diference untill you 'master' one or both. to do that you'll looking at 2k on a gun and days in nights out 24/7... then theres another leval of understanding, and another after that. (not including developing 'intuisions). so, it will always be accuracy over anything else, and can you hit or does the gun outdo you.(not what caliber..ish lol). 1 Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
.20 ? I keep hearing about .20's and I like the concept, just not the availability of ammo. A gunsmith mate swore by 20cal and said you got the best of both worlds! Some 25 years back he used to have an old Sheridan Blue [& Sliver] Streak multi pump in 20cal. Not many .20 pellets available in UK then! Being a bit 'anal' and a bloody good 'smith' he made a former to size down .22 pellets. Bit laborious but they were a 'perfect' fit! The gun / pellet combo was awesome but hard work to pump! 1 Quote Link to post
Mawders 595
Whilst one might gain the benefits of both calibre in .20 you will also most certainly Experiance the pitfalls of both calibre in .20 2 Quote Link to post
ghillies 209
heard abou them sheridons from a couple places, all said the dogs danglies but..pump pump pump lol. Quote Link to post

robwelsh 354
Iv used .177 for years now, an truth be told iv never over penetrated anything. Yes it goes right through, as do most 22s at 30 yrds, but its still dead at the end of the day. Cheaper pellets, flatter shooting so easier to get the perfect shot placement and it adapts to night time shooting a lot better, IMO. 1 Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
I use both, but I hunt in .22 why? because my gun just happened to be .22 and I like the extra size and skill required to put it where it needs to go (awaiting incomming flack). Seriously though a .177 may have a flatter faster trajectory hense more tollerant to use error however the .22 is also more forgiving of user error because it produces much more damage. But all in all it's down to what you think and how you do it Tony 1 Quote Link to post
robwelsh 354
I'm thinking of a swap mind to .20 is it much.difference? Is it worth it? I'm unsure Quote Link to post
