Good morning with the Hounds

We met at 9.00am this morning, hounds were very keen despite the high temps, we drew the first field of alfalfa with the thought of maybe putting up a hare ( because of the scarcity of quarry we hunt coyote, hare and fox here at London) but to no avail, so we quickly moved on to a 50 acre strip of maize (yellow corn they call it here in Canada ) I drew through the corn and few hounds spoke and then a few more until all 20 1/2 couple were screaming , they hunted back and forth for about 20mins until I heard on the radio a coyote had been viewed going out of the north end of the corn and across the road, I quickly got galloping north to see the prettiest picture anyone could see, the hounds were flying away across a wheat stubble field, I blew gone away and quickly caught up with the pack that were doing a good job, we galloped on for a mile and half or so, up a cedar fence line where hounds checked, to the left ( west) was another open stubble field and to the right a small bit of rough grass and few trees with a deep ditch running east west to the north, I cast them in the stubble, nothing then cast them to the east in the rough grass, where they found again, they hunted him over the ditch and along the north side, I jumped the ditch but the field declined only to see the hounds jump back into the ditch where they got there just reward, not the longest hunt and not the biggest of coyotes, but we've had a couple of weeks of blank hot rough days so it was nice for the hounds

Do you find Yotes usualy leave quite easily 20 minutes isn't that long in 50 acres is it?. Intresting hearing about hunting over there though thanks for sharing. What hounds are they?

It depends on the sniff, our country has vast tracts of corn, somtimes 1000acre blocks so hounds work corn alot, it also depends if the coyote has been hunted before, as a formal pack, we are not the only ones hunting coyotes, there are lots of lads with there own hounds that hammer the coyotes, so if the coyote has had a run in with hounds at some point it knows to get moving, the scent on Wednesday morning was better than it has been but I wouldn't have said it was a good scent, which is why the coyote probably stuck around for so long , that and the fact it was a young one that probably didn't know where he could run

Have you always hunted over there?

No mate, started in the west country, then the lakes, then Scotland , Ireland , Italy and Canada so I've been about a bit
