early start with a Scarborough lad

Recommended Posts

decided to give a mate a run out with me today as i have been telling him about my permission and as he seemed eager so i was happy to take him along for a proper northern day out in the field

i myself didn't want to wake up at 5am when the alarm went off but, the jack russell has a second instinct when its ferreting day so what with her licking me to death and the wife nagging in my ear i got up and got ready.

7am phone goes and its my mate here a record dash from down the coast in 50 minutes so off we went.

was not sure about what he was expecting so when we arrived and i sort of showed him from there to there he seemed a little taken aback at the expanse of it all.

after all the excitement of getting a ferret finder and wanting to find out how to use it i took the hob out but the beggar was off down the hole before i had a chance to put the collar on.a second ferret we took a two year old sandy was sent down after him but soon came back up with a watch ya think you doing to me look on its face. as the sandy hadn't been worked before i let him wander around and get his bearings but i think he will need a few goes on a couple of smaller sets to get some confidence.

the lad i worked with was confident at putting nets down, dispatching rabbits but no bloody good at standing on hillsides as he seemed to slip quite frequently.

the rabbits are back in the same sets that they were habiting last year but it is still far too early for a decent bag as the majority of them are still sitting out in the scrub.there seems to be a fair number kicking around ( well 18 less than there was this morning lol) but i dont think i will ever eradicate the problem from the farm or the village as they run straight of a 7,800 acre moor and into the village. so hopefully its a job for as long as me old bones will take it.

off to bed goodnight a day in the field tires an old man out :bye:

Worst thing he could do is that vin,,, if it's rabbit control then yes,,, but for sport,, defo a no no... Them boxes could wipe a place out,, it's nice to know there's hopefully always going to be a supply coming of the hill .

Hopefully me and vin will get started up north with the stinkers next week,,

drop boxes are ok in certain situations, if your near to your land and can check them every day its ok but i have other things to do and cannot put the time in with them. the villagers are happy to see me walking around and i agree with tommo its more a sport for me than pest control. what i abhor is the people who drop them and leave the rotten carcasses in them for days. that is bang out of order. unfortunately it happens alot round here and have seen many boxes with rotten rabbits.i have heard people go in hard with the boxes and obliterate rabbit populations. good for land owners........not so good for the ferreter, cause then your out looking for more permission and like everyone says getting that is harder than winning the lottery
