Options for crossbow sights?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I came across my crossbow i got years ago, been doing some target practice with it using the open sights which have been ok but i wanting some kind of sight for it. Had a look around, there seems to be two options a scope or a red dot sight has anyone tried used a crossbow with a either of these sights before?

Its just for target practice (got the rifles for hunting and know it illegal to hunt with it!!) so not planning on spending loads, Just thought i'd post this to see if anyone has any thoughts on which type of sight would work best.

Also does anyone know what target material is good to shoot into i.e easy to pull the bolts out and doesn't damage them?

Cheers

either will do the job, with the scope just zero it how you would a rifle. With the red dot i used a work bench held down with sand bags with the crossbow in a clamp, then fire an arrow into the target and then zeroed the laser onto the arrow at what ever range you want.

I have a target that is basically a load of foam mats piled on top of each other and bound. you need to get some sort of decent target or you will be forever bending, damaging and loosing arrows which costs a fair amount. I have my old one that you can have but it is very heavy so you would have to pick it up

Yeah its one of the cons with using a crossbow is trying to find the bolts if it hits the ground.

Thanks for the offer but i stay well up north so picking it ups out the question! I'll try get my hands on a pile of foam and some duck tape, see what i can come up with!

I wouldnt get anything too expensive or new just for the crossbow. The scope i used to use was a daft little 4 x 20 bargain bucket effort. You will probably find there is a limit to how accurate you can make it anyway. I used to get about 10cm groups at 35yards and that was about as good as it got. The rails on the crossbows i had were pretty basic so probably limited by that as well in terms of accuracy

I'll see how the bsa handles first then take it from there, 10cm groups at 35yards sounds good to me!!

I wasnt un happy with it but compare it to what you would expect out of an air rifle or rim fire at that range and its pretty pants. the recoil with a crossbow is obviously different as it pulls it forward instead of back
