maximus33 0
I am looking for a good terrier x whippet for a bit of rabbiting/bushing etc... It will be working on the heather moorland - dense cover... I would prefer to buy a young started dog but I am interested in puppies also... Thanks Quote Link to post

Thanks beddy whippet? i work a full laguna whippet and he loves bushing a good 20% of his seasons catches will be bushing so just because terriers bush doesnt mean you need a terrier cross whippet to do both dont get me wrong may do the job better but ide look in to what you really need 1st get more advice. ATB keep me posted on what you get!! Quote Link to post
maximus33 0
One cross I have seen work this sort of land well is jack russell x whippet. Im sure a beddy x would do the trick also and I wouldnt mind trying a patterdale x either.. It is very very thick cover here so I would definatley rather have some terrier in the mix - if it was just normal bushes I would agree... Can anyone point me in the direction of any decent dogs/pups? Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
Get something a bit bigger so you're not limiting yourself, I used to keep terrier/whippet crosses years ago & preban if they knocked up something bigger they'd get a pasting although they never jacked......no good having a dog laid up, I'd be looking at 22/23inch Quote Link to post

kps1979 1,308
im thinking about lining my border x patterdale with a friends whippet, think shes coming into season now, would be ideal for where i go, the terrier gets a few rabbits anyway so this cross might catch a few bolters maybe! It is how natures job of 'survival of the fittest' is replicated. In a wolf pack it is the alpha pair that breed and this ensures that pups that are produced are of best x best......... If you just breed any dog x any dog as so so many people seem to think it is fine to do then you are going against the grain of nature and you will most likley not produce anything other than culls and curs - although I would only apply the later term to a failed earth dogs (on here) as I dont belive a dog has to be game for small quarry. That is a word more reserved for Bulldogs - or not haha,................. Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
accidental mating should be culled, if the person bred these intentionally they want their heads seeing to Quote Link to post
maximus33 0
saw something interesting while wer on the suibject of curs... There are a couple of breeds of dog in southern USA called cur dogs - Mountain Curs and Carolina Curs http://www.treemypcc.com/ They are Squirrel hunting dogs thatare bred to tree squirells.... The parnell bred Carolina curs certainly look as though they have been bred down in part from bulldogs and patterdales so they possibly were originally given the name curs as they were failed box/earth/boar dogs that were vocal - thus curs................................ interesting.
