jimbo66 0
Hi guys just after a bit of advice. i've got a 2 year old springer. her recall is brilliant at home, at the local park and fields. the only problem i have with her is as soon as she picks up game scent she runs off and chases it. and i cant stop her. someone mentioned to me about using a shock collar. any suggestions? any advice is greatly appreciated. Nik_B 3,790
They definitely work I've used one but then you can get other problems as a result, it might put them off hunting for example or cause nervousness if you get it wrong. I would try and find a really good trainer to show you how to use it and also condition the dog to the collar. At first they don't have a clue why they're getting the shock and their first reaction is to run away. I would consider the e-collar as a last resort which needs to be used with care. echo 24
There are loads of other collars on the market, like spray collars.Just as effective with out the pain Quote Link to post
stoaty1 35
Have you trieda training line and then take her to an area where there will be scent. That way when she is scenting around you can prevent her taking off from a distance and recall her. Keep at it and she should learn that you are still in control even at a distance away from her and to control herself. regards, ian Quote Link to post
danspence2012 5
i would only use the collor as last resort.. i had a simular proplem with a cocker.. i used a 15 mtr traing/long lead s it is light and the dog thinks its off free.. and do a few recalls out and about. and give a good yank if the dog bolts and dose not return. remenber to praise when the dog returns tho. the dog will learn in the end that it gets praise for coming back and if it dose not come back it will get corected.. might also be a good idea to do some hunting exersies close in to you, as it sounds like the dog is noise down and gone, you need the dog to stay close. kind of direct the dog out each side and if the dog ventures to far away call back and praise, i groawl (ah ah ah to far) and my dogs hunt closer. i found reenforcing heel help too. dont let the dog sniff around or any thing heel is heel and once dog is getting on with that throw out tennis balls or dummys at heel and dont let the dog run off. then dog it off the lead. i found it instaled a bit more obidiance when of out in the field. it takes time tho. 5 min setions. hope this helps.
