bullmastiff 615
I'm usually just a pot hunter taking a rabbit or two as and when I can find time but whilst out walking the dog I came to some fields I've never been through before and noticed the damage done by the rabbits, the grass had been clipped to a manor lawn for about 5yds out from almost every hedge and every 15-20 yds their were large semi circles stripped clean with rabbits sat there bold as brass sunbathing in the mid day sun, so I thought I'd have a word with the farmer about taking a few. Finally managed to find the farmer and after a quick chat I asked about helping him with the rabbit problem, he was overjoyed to have someone ask to help out. Someone comes to do the 'pest control' but they turn up every now and then, scream around the fields in a 4X4 and shoot the deer/foxes then bugger off again leaving the 'real' vermin (his words, he's a dairy farmer) behind to continue eating his silage flat and pruning the Maize. Apparently he tried having a word with them about the rabbits and they laughed and said "Have you seen the mess a .243 makes of a rabbit, whats the point?" - clever guys hey... So after an hour I was back for a quick walk with the air rifle, I managed to get three rabbits and a magpie and the dog caught and eat another but it was more a chance to check out the likely spots. Another quick chat with the farmer to see if he wanted any of the rabbits for himself and got a invitation to come back that night for a trip around the farm with him in the Landy... cracking!!! Now it's been a while since I shot from a vehicle but I'm pretty sure we never used to travel at 30 miles an hour!! but the farmer was so excited I think he probably ran over more than I shot! Everytime I shot one he would shout "GOOD SHOT!" and speed across to the rabbit, jump out, check it over giggling "head shot, good for the pot that is" we only managed another 4 rabbits and a moth eaten old cock Pheasant that he ran over but It was a cracking night out and the farmer seemed to really enjoy himself. Anytime I fancy a few rabbits he said just head on over!! quick pic of the rabbit damage, with two offender's caught in the act. "Good for the pot they are!!!" Quote Link to post

bullmastiff 615
Thanks for the reply's and yes W.D. the third from the top was a ruddy great buck rabbit! probably the biggest I've had in a number of years... and the hardest to skin as well, he was like leather!!!! It's my fault for writing such a long post just thought it would be better than the occasional "HAD GOOD NIGHT, SHOT 4, HERE'S THE PIC", i must be getting as bad as Ditchy!!! I'll try and keep it more to the point next time. We hit him as he came out of the reeds by a stream where he got hit in the head/neck by the bumper I'm guessing he was an old bird getting towards the end of a hard breeding season, kicked about by some of the younger healthier cock's? as you can see in the photo he look's a bit hen-pecked, his Tail and Wingtip feathers are almost down to the quill's??? but i've never been one to turn down something for the pot so in the bag he went, 3-4 hours in a slow cooker's enough to soften even the toughest bird! with the added bonus he'll actually have a bit of decent flavour but without the usual lead seasoning.
