Hi

I have just applied for FAC, it was my first application. I have a permission for rabbit (yet to be assessed by the police) and also one for deer (and the odd fox) which already has approval for shooting over for deer and fox. I should say right now that my intention is to shoot deer, and specifically Roe Deer in Scotland, that is where I have permission to shoot deer under the supervision/mentoring of a competent deer stalker.

I have applied for 22lr +mod for the rabbits and .243 +mod for the deer (and the odd fox).

22LR - rabbits + vermin

I have chosen 22lr as the ammunition is comparatively cheaper than any other, it will reach out to 70 yards quite accurately (depending on the shooter, the ammo and the rifle combo) I intend to get plenty of practice glassing the terrain, choosing approach, setting up the shot for backdrop etc, safety drills when moving, stopping negotiating obstacles etc and getting comfortable with stalking using the gear I will be going deer stalking with.

I thought about applying for 17hmr as well for the rabbits but to be quite honest I don't have the money for this rifle as well as the 22lr, my rabbit permission is hilly and I have only one or two warrens out to 100 yards + that I may find the 17hmr an asset, but 17hmr has disadvantages like its noisy (horses in paddocks nearby, houses nearby and the ammunition is much more expensive than .22lr) - I will just have to shoot the rabbits with the 22lr and improve my stalking skills ( I could always set up some ambushes using machinery and such to occlude my approach so that I can approach unseen to within range in the case of the longer range warrens).. I intend to get a scope with a pretty good image and a fairly large objective lens (~45 - 50) as this will enable me to see a wider field of view I believe. I have also applied for a moderator for the .22lr. I have been recommended a cz with a trigger upgrade for this purpose, and many on this forum have cz in 22lr and can vouch for them.

.243 - Deer and the odd fox

Based on an old hands' advice, and some other info gleaned from this forum I have applied for .243 for the deer permission. The salient points were;

1. .243 is a common calibre, and one can choose the appropriate weight, velocity and energy from many manufacturers of production ammunition depending on your deer or fox.

2. You will almost certainly be able to visit a distant Permission, drop in on a local gun shop and they will likely have the round you are looking for or something else suitable, for the quarry you are intent on.

3. The .243 ammunition is relatively cheap, and on the permission I will be probably shooting at ranges less than 200 yards

4. The .243 has a milder kick than the .270 (my other option) and in the right hands can be as accurate as the rest.

5. Second hand .243 rifles are quite common, and a fairly good one will not break the bank.

these are my whys and wherefores on the rifles I chose for my first FAC application (posted beginning August 2012 to Kent police )

regards

Andrew

.22 FAC air for vermin controll. During they FEO visit/interview I asked if I would only be able to buy a .22 FAC air rifle or could I use othe calibre such as .20/.25, I was told it would be solely for what I wrote down and he asked if I would be applying for anything bigger in the future? I replied I wouldn't mind a .22lr at some point so he wrote that down and a mod and expanding ammo. To my glee all on my ticket when dropped on the door Matt Friday! Never enjoyed my shooting so much since using the .22lr!
