Breeding a line

Recommended Posts

How many generations do you need to breed dogs to consider it your "line"?

If you breed two dogs that you got from 2 other folks...are the pups "your line"?

If you breed two dogs of an already established line together...are the pups still that line, or yours?

Take care.

No idea UHD but plenty of folk love to 'claim' lines. Either within a generation or two to say its their own, or when they are so far removed from the stuff they are originally out of, you won't find a drop of the original stuff there!

The last thing i'd want is to start calling what I breed a keep a line, especially a line with my name or one of my dogs names attached to it. Just be happy with the mutts you got, graft 'em hard and, if they are good enough, reproduce and carry on. No names usually means no bullshit...

Don't understand all the hype about the line's aslong as the parent's are good hard working grafters im happy to have the pup out of them, honestly dont care if the grandparents grandparents where "the dogs bollox" to me it's waht you put into the mutt.

p,s dont call me out on coursing dog bloodline's becuase i wouldn't now a good coursing dog from my ass to my elbow

More food for thought...can you have a "line" if you are not linebreeding?

i would say yes, would linebreeding not be used to set a type, a line could come from 1 or 2 studs owned by the one guy but mated to a variety of bitches

I've always thought the same as Chid: I've had the same 'family' of lurchers for over 20 years, but I wouldn't call them a line as I always out crossed, using different stud dogs to my bitches. The closest I bred was cousin to cousin. Yes, I bred for certain temperament and working traits, and I can identify particular traits right back to the original bitch I bought in, but I would be wary of calling them a line as such.

No such thing has someone owning a line off dogs. You can take credit for breeding a good litter or good pup but thats it.Because at the end day we all had to get a dog off someone to start off imo

not if you done the origanal cross, (pure x pure) then surely you have started a new lurcher line if you keep going and line breed

Starting from the base(pure to pure) then yes you can call the line your's after several generations of line/inbreeding. How do folk think genuine lines come about in the first place..Although i'd hazard a guess and say most lines are closely guarded (and rightly so). A line doesnt have to breed to type but must throw certain characteristics into the progeny otherwise why breed/start a line in the first place. most folk tend to think a persons name stuck on the family of dogs is a line but it most definatley isnt. A line takes many generations to become established and must be culled hard to make a decent name for itself unless your in it just for the £££££££££££'s. Jmo :D
