After having been contacted by a bloke off here who was wanting to get out to do a bit of ferreting, but was in the same boat as me with the no permission sernario. So after exchanging addreses we decieded that tuesday just gone would be the day to go door knocking and see what it produced. He arrived here at 9.15 after i had dropped the lad off at school for is 1st day and we set off, we decieded to go north to some places i knew would be worth trying. The 1st farm we stopped at we met and talked to a lovely lady who was more then willing for us to ferret and has lots of land and rabbits but after talking too her husband it was deceided that not to upset the gamekeeper it would be best ferreted january onwards so numbers were exchanged and a promise made too call in dec and the land was ours, so we continued on the next farm was the same but this time was told pop back next time were up and the land is ours just that the head farmer was out at market but they add been waiting for someone to call for permission as they were over run,By this time it was dinner time and we were wondering if we would have any luck to ferret that day we called into a small little cottage and was greeted by a lovely lady who was more then helpful and sent us to the farm that had a real rabbit problem or so we thought! we knocked on what we thought was the farmers door instead it was a differnt farm altogether but he was more then happy to see us when we asked about the farm we were looking for he said ; Dont worry about them down the road have you got some ferrets with you? off coarse we replied; Come with me he said he took us across the road to his fields and showed us round. Lots of land most next to a rather large river lovely views also he was more then welcome for the dogs to coem along as he loved working dogs and had worked some himself in his younger days he showed us the sets and off we went 1st set was a little 5 holer out bolted 6 rabbits only got 2 as the 1st one bolted into the net and 4 others followed straight after before another net could be placed on what a start we thought we then moved down to the river bank with caution as he had warned us about the large amounts of wild mink on the land.Again a lice small set and 4 rabbits bolted this time 1 caught by the dog other 3 went on into the next set as planned as we did not net that one as wanted a run for the dog the farmer then joined us as he was a bit off a ferreter himself in his young days he said, he also had gained s permission on the 2 joining farms and said if we do a good job for him the permission will keep coming we did the next set ony a 3 holer another 3 rabbits caught 1 bolted 2 up a stop ender dug out we the did a 17 holer and anoter 7 bolted out by which time it was going on for 6 so we did one last small set before packing up another rabbit bolted and caught and the day was done i was really pleased as my dog add been marking well all day and missy had had some good runs on the rabbits the farmer was really pleased and showed us a hay field he wanted doing next time so a great day was had 15 rabbits in the bag and one happy farmer.
