Newcomer from Ireland

Hey all,

I decided to sign up here because for the past few weeks ive been contemplating buying a ferret or two and working them.

I had no interest until i stumbled across a video of ferreting and thought that would be a great past time or hobby.

I am naturally an animal lover and to get results through a working relation with a ferret seems great. I havent rushed out and bought a pair of ferrets, i'd prefer to do all the research first. Hense why i signed up, ive read some great advise on here and seen others in a similar situation to my own. Also and maybe i stand to be corrected but there doesnt seem to be an active online community here in Ireland when it comes to ferreting.

Anyway, thanks for having me and and hints in the right direction are all greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum mate, I'm on the same island as you, just further north (Co Down), if I can be any help, just ask, and if you would like a well handled 14 week old hob and don't mind a drive,"come on up", either way don't go out and buy any ferrets, I am sure there plenty of good lads near you that would sort you out with the gift of a few. :bye:

Thank you all very much for the great welcome and especially the very generous offers. Furritus, Id love to accept your offer but im going to try get "basics 101" learned before i commit to owning a ferret. I have the facilities and time to commit to owning and working ferrets my only concern at the moment is i have 2 young children, 10 and 4 and im afraid they might get biten. Now, dont get me wrong ive seen just as much friendly ferret videos as grumpy ones and coming from a family that bred Irish wolf hounds and boxers i know its down to the owners rearing of an animal that dictates its behaviour. Id feel confident in taking any dog and transforming it into a pet but i admit i have no clue in rearing ferrets.

Carlowhunter thanks for the offer and id like to attend a morning ferreting, no substitute for hands on experience eh. Might annoy you with questions tho :icon_redface:

Ive found myself over the last few weeks scouting fields etc while driving by, ill end up someones exhaust soon.

No problem mate, I to have a few young ones, 16, 12, and 8, it is the 12 year old that does all the handling and nip training, he even took two kits last year to a show and tell class, no problems with nipping at all, if you ever want to take up the offer, just contact me, we always have a spare ferret around for a fellow Irishman, make sure you get a day or two out with Carlowhunter, remember " old age and craft will always beat youth and skill ".
