danspence2012 5
hi all, my little cocker is doing well in his training, he is nearly a year old now, sits to whistle voice and hand signal, heels well, hunts and retrieves very well too. recall all good. and so one..... i have notice when he flushes he dose give chase and he will ignore me when i try and stop him or recall him. (same with cats) he walks past them at heel gives them a good look ears prick up but stays at heel. however, while at heel or stay if another dog walks passed 8 times out of 10 he will stay but latly again, he will temtaion gets the better of him and he gose to play. and i feel i can not correct him in front of dog walkers as they think im not letting him mix with other dogs, but the dont relise he mixes with other dogs but on my trems and when i say so...i was even doing sit and stay once and some women said he was lovely and welbehaved and called him to her.....grrrrrrrr....lol i intend to start using a bolting rabbit to help with this can any one tell me how to use them and how to use it in diffrent was as an exserise for the dog.. was thinking to start just have him at sit and stay and keep setting it off to stop the chase.. then... move onto set it up and have him hunting and let him flush it (i release it) and try to get him to sit to the flush (one day lol) am i on the right track??? Mooch. 177
Put your dog back on the lead and get somebody else to release the bolting rabbit. When dog shows no move to chase take the lead off but keep dog sitting next to you. Then try it walking (on lead). When your assistant releases the rabbit, insist that dog sits. Then try it off lead. Then move onto a bolt while hunting and so on. Quote Link to post

moonlighter 1,164
I used a long cord with my dog. So when he thinks he is free running, you've still got a lead on him. Quote Link to post
danspence2012 5
hi all, thanks for the advice... i am going to take your advice and have him on a lead then move to check line then.. will also try doing it with him at heel and get him to sit on a flush... lots of good ideas thanks every one... its strange i did a bit last night... and he ran in twise but that was out of about maybe 15 rabbit bolts... moonlighter 1,164
Don't over do the bolting rabbits. 15 in one go seems a bit excessive. You could end up winding the dog up rather than making in more steady, if you know what I mean. 1 Quote Link to post

danspence2012 5
I'll be very interested in how this cocker turns out......its done some graft and its on a year old. He is a year old today oddly…. I have been going through the paul French (I think) dvd. (and others I must add) He on the dvd tells you were you should be and at what age.. I found I was always about a month behind from what the dvd was telling me. I have shooting friends of mine that had there dogs working a lot earlier than mine.. this will be my dogs 1st season on our rough shoot. In the year he has done the basics…sit stay, directions, retrieving, hunting, and heel work... most of which like, hunting and retieving he did naturally and just needed some exersies putting them all together.. This passed 2 months we have been doing the stop whistle which again, he didn’t take to for a while but it just clicked one day... and all the time during his training he has enjoyed himself constant tail waging ECT. Bolting rabbit: I ended up doing 15 that day as I was trying to end on a hi note for the dog. I grant you may have been a bit to long that time but, is not showing signs of being wound up at all. I normally train just for 5 or 10 mins a day depending what it is he is doing. And once I stuck to these time he pick things up so much better/ quicker. All I was seeking advice on.. (for steadying up over the next few months) was advice on bolting rabbit as he dose want to chase at the moment. Was not intending him to be sitting to flush by next week. Already from when I last posted min week I think he is sitting and staying off the lead to bolting rabbit. I have been doing 5 mins of this then go for a walk. Quote Link to post
