gonetoearth 5,144
Wrong !! Again your opinion. The para olympics. Is and allways has been for people with differing levels of disability. Yes they all want to win but some will never win. They compeat maybe not your cup of tea gnash. But. Sport is a great leveller. Eh. Think you would under stand that being a west. Ham fan , See you can't make. Siilk purse out of a pigs ear. Disabled sports men and women. Have a great understanding of this most have grew up. With the attitude. Of the able bodied world being. Against them. Every day life is a task. Getting around is a task , every one in life ain't. Bolt. The other members of the 100 m final exept the silver and bronz. Knew the were not going to win so what do they do. THEY TRY THERE BEST , that's. True sport Win at all cost. Let's think eh CHEAT. You don't agree with it but that don't make you right. Sport is for all. To win is. The aim. But in this case taking part Makes a lot of them feel like winners. Good enough for me. gnasher16 30,025
While thats certainly an admirable and romantic view of competetive sport............you,me and anyone whos ever competed or even watched sport knows the reality is its a pile of bullshit !! Sport should never be about " the taking part " not on any level from kids under 9 football to Messi in the Champions League final.......winning mentalities are not evolved from " its the taking part that counts "....................you have a winning mentality dont you Saintonearth ?.........or maybe im wrong.......maybe when Fellaini puts his hands on a defenders shoulders to soar into the air and score the winner against Liverpool 10,000 nutty blue shirted scousers in the Gwladys Street end all shout out to the referee " OI MR.WEBB THAT WASNT A GOAL BECAUSE OUR BOY COMMITTED A FOUL AND CHEATED " ...............or maybe its only you that does that Disabled folk taking part in a form of sport great good for them...................trying to convince the world that sitting in a wheelchair throwing a ball about is competetive rugby or basketball then trying to put us on a guilt trip for not recognising it as such....not for me sorry i refuse to be a fool to my own intelligence whether its unfashionable to do so or not.

Born Hunter 17,751
i stress again i think its great that disabled folk can enrich their lives through sport.......just dont put us all on a guilt trip for not embracing it the way we do with mainstream sport. That pretty much sums up how I feel about it. Others love it but it's not for me. I've got no greater chance of being an olympian than a bloke with no legs has, physically I'm genetically inferior to every olympian, should they open a handicap class for me where I get a 20m head start in the 100m sprint? Or perhaps start another olympic event for everyone that hasn't got what it takes to be an olymian where we all start with handicaps.... For me the paralympics is a celebration of the human spirit that the dissabled sportsmen show, nothing more and nothing less. It doesn't interest me in the same way that the Olympics does, I have admiration for the competitors but I watch the Olympics to see those that are just THE best, superhuman in their ability, those that just surpass 10 fold anything that I could possibly acheive. I want to stand in awe of perfection and superiority, not in admiration of how tough someone has is compared to the rest of us, that's what the olympics are about for me.
Jingzy1 3
You have to hold yer hat to the paralympians but this is an interesting debate around Pistorius. I read an article 2 years ago about him and wanting to be in the able bodied olympics. I for one dont think he should be because of the advantages the blades can give to disabled athletes. He was shown to have better lung capacity and running longevity, but during the article it was obvious that it was the blades that actually meant his body did not have to work as hard to produce the same results as an able bodied person. So, although these athletes are in their own right excellent at what they do and mentally strong, I don't think they should be in the able bodied olympics. Interestingly, he argued that the blades do not give additional advantage; this has also in my eyes been rubbished by that race where the eventual winner was so far behind on the bend. It was obvious that his extra stride and length of blades contributed to the win. If they are going to do this then all athletes should be using the same blades with the same material and design characteristics for overall fairness.
