Ferrets need research and thought before getting them, not just an impulse because there weren't any guinea pigs left.

Lads maybe its just me ,but over the years i have seen ferrets kept in some horrible circumstances by guys that treat them as a disposable item.They feed them when they can be bothered ,keep them in hutches the size of a fookin shoe box.And probably at the end of a season hit them on the head or worse!.The reason for this is they are usually free or a fiver at most come breeding season and are easily obtained again.Maybe if the price of a ferret went up, half the dickheads that i have seen over the years with them would be put off owning one.A ferret bought for £30 from that pet shop probably has a better chance of getting looked after.

I think if i remember right a petshop has to have a seperate license to keep/sell ferrets on their premises.

 

Normally in petshops they are fed when they are remembered about, swelting in glass tanks

 

I can understand what your saying vermin catcher but i dont think it works. People buy dogs at hundreds of pounds and neglect them, people buy rabbits

at pets at home at £20- £30 and they are forgot about at the top of garden.

I got one of my ferrets from a petshop in Carlisle. Missus decided it had to come home (you know how they are). Price......£40!!!! I know, you don't have to tell me. It was kept in an indoor rabbit hutch. Good condt etc. Turned out to be my best worker and worth £40 every day of the week

 

This petshop has everything. I was by Carlisle last week and had a look. They had ducks,ducklings, chickens, ferrets, kittens and Pomeranian pups all in there for sale. Must admit whether you agree or disagree they was in good conditions and well looked after.

30 quid,,,,,,40 quid.......or free of charge,,,,,,at the end of the day,,,,,if theyre free theyre disposable as some people may think...thats no reason to knock the poor little stinker on the head,,,,,,at the end of the day,,its worked its little heart out for ya,,,,,,so respect it and treat it decent,,,,,,but people shouldn go gettin one on impulse until they know wats fully involved,,,,,,,i dont think pet shops selling them are a good idea,,,,,,,if you want one,,theres plenty in rescues all over the place,,,,,and on here and other forums........just make sure its looked after properly,,,,,,,thats my view..

The old ferret does seem to pull the short straw...Its a shame, because for such a small animal, they really can fill a game bag!

 

I like to treat mine well, some good grub, nice dry straw and a big old run.

 

Too often I have seen them kept in stinking damp cages, fed on crap when it suits

 

Work them hard, treat them like heroes....Maybe doesnt just apply to dogs

£30 -£40 for a ferret is an insult to all the time and effort in rearing and raising them to a decent size.

 

I have had 14 kits this year from my 2 best Jills.. I have kept 2 Jill kits myself and given the rest away to good homes.( well i hope they are )

 

If I was to try and put a price on all the stress/effort/loss/costs/Time spent cleaning and tending etc etc I would want £100 a kit.

 

I,m just happy that I met a few decent genuine chaps who came and took kits and will hopefully hear how they get on along the way.

 

I dont think I will be breeding anymore kits for a few seasons..until i need to replace older Ferrets.

Agree with this,

If you value a rabbit at 50p - £1 it doesnt take long for a ferret to make you back that £30. That said I would never pay 30 for a ferret as the going rate is free or at least very cheap, in the same way I wont knowlingly pay over the odds for anything but the actual value of a ferret is certainly a lot more then £30

Difference is, those that give their ferrets away usually make a judgement on who they go to. Those that sell see £££'s and sell to anyone.

If the pet shop houses the ferts in a good enriched, clean environment, tends them well, has the ferts well socialised, gives accurate advice/discretion on looking after ferrets, then fair play. But if they have them in wee cages/persplex boxes with nothing to do (odd tunnel and litter tray doesn't count), then no.... pets shops prey on kiddies to come in and stare through the cage and whinge 'I want it'/or for people to come in and think 'poor wee lonely thing', it's all marketing ploys. Unforunately the more people that buy from pet shops promote the 'puppy sale' (purchasing an animal from pity).I don't agree with pet store animal sales, personal view, don't agree with backyard breeders either.
