Came across a big Grass Snake a couple of months ago, looked like it had just shed as there was still skin over part of it's eyes and it was very tired looking. It was basking right on the back road into a busy country park and wouldn't move so I picked it up carefully and put it over in the sun by the edge of some woodland. It was a nice sight.

Seen a couple of Grass Snake but yet to see an Adder.

We have a few in Cambridgeshire. They are very shy, and easy to miss in long grass, so very hard to spot. I've seen them swimming along the bottoms of shallow lakes looking for food: the terriers found one once, and it did the 'dead snake impression beautifully: writhed on to its back, opened its mouth, shut its eyes and lay there having let off its stinky glands: the dogs wouldn't go near it LOL But wouldn't leave it alone either, totally suspicious and fascinated by it. I picked it up carefully, still lying all in coils on its back, and it open its eyes and looked at me after a bit: very funny to see. I put it down, right side up by the edge of the lake, kept the dogs back, and after a few moments it realised it wasn't under threat, and swam off down the side of the bank. I knew they did the dead, decomposing animal thing, but hadn't seen it before: fascinating.
