bigdaz 688
how small is small to you freddy. ask our lass  ..........seriously tho under twenty inchs ad say was small in the lurcher game....my preference is at least 24 an over to be honest for the little nit of rabbiting i do these days,,,, To be honest I see no reason for dogs under 20" and are they worthy of the title lurcher which should be capable of all round lurcher work whereas a smaller dog would be restricted/impeded by it's size. big daz have you got we man syndrome what a statement You've sussed me mate, that's why I call myself bigdaz even though I'm only 4 ft 4" in my socks, or then again it could just be my opinion. I don't care how much heart a dog has, if it's under 20" it's at a serious disadvantage to a larger dog and in many cases not just disadvantaged but incapable. 1 Quote Link to post

nothernlite 18,078
we all tend to talk in inches when on about lurchers. which if fine for general information. but for topics that are trying to define the size you need to better discribe the dog. for instance when folk talk about whippets. i have a picture in my minds eye. of a small frail flying machine. yet folk put up pictures of a lurcher type big powerfull 22 inch things. the only thing they have in common with what i think is a whippet is a smooth coat. the dividing lines are blurred. i think you need to put a hight and weight up. to give a better idea. i have a whippet lurcher that is just 23 inch but a pic tells you straight away he isnt a small dog. and the fact he is not much short of sixty pounds. tells you the same so when discribeing your dog hight and weight will help. . my opinion would be there is little need for oversized lurchers on this island now . good point never wieghted my dogs but i can see where your coming from all my small lurchers are heavy powerful small dogs atb Edited September 1, 2012 by nothernlite 1 Quote Link to post

sikastag_1 689
See it all the time it's not the size of the dog etc it's the heart inside etc etc, maybe in the terrier world, but IMO its dogs for jobs, at the end of the day it's got to be humane aswell watching a whippet hanging off the arse of a deer wouldn't be something that would float my boat, there's good and bad in big and small dogs, I wouldn't go out and shoot a red stag with a 222, I dare say you could kill one with a 222 but you'd use a suitable calibre for the job so get a dog that can do the job properly rather than one that could do it but make hard work of it, weights the biggest factor, once there's impact it doesn't matter what length leg is. 1 Quote Link to post

paulus 26
24 to 26 is the ideal size for my needs around this way what height are your two (Father/Son) again Paulus.? Also have to agree in saying i class a small lurcher as under 23/24, a medium lurcher between 25-27, and big lurcher at 28+. Ive never owned a lurcher under 28tts although have been out with a 23, 24/25, 26 and seen them work, but i personally cant comment on small lurchers, although i can say out of them the best worker was Mo Chara's sire who was 24/25 (cant mind exact height) closely followed by his own half brother who is 26 25 and 26 and soon to be father/son and grandson Quote Link to post

Ausnick 190
from personal experience. I think the only big quarry the small dogs can handle well is either the sick, injured, elderly or very young animals. One of the whippets a mate has will handle bigger stuff good but ALWAYS gets hurt, where the bigger dog will come off fine and ready to go. of course not all small dogs are the same but from the 6 I've seen work, I think I'll stick to larger dogs... from personal experience i have seen several small dogs on different occasions take large quarry uninjured not old or unwell on a regular basis preban of course so i dont see the need for large dogs in this day with the ban it just draws unwanted attention to yourself atb the ban doesn't affect me as I'm in Aus. What are you considering large quarry? I had a ridgeback bull stag, powerful little bugger, the only problem he had was his height and now I've got two pups out of him that are 27 inches and 29 inches to the shoulder and excel on large stuff. our large quarry does not compete with yours our largest would be red deer and would not atempt them preban all we have left is rats and rabbits hence the small dogs atb I was out a couple of weeks ago and came across a mob of reds. When I first spotted them they were about 20 metres away but by the time i got the dogs off the deer were about 150 metres away and moving. they're quick feckers! Quote Link to post
bribri988 141
What do you THINK he can or CANT handle he is a full laguna whippet/ not a CROSS 21" no fear most of all has never BACKED down Edited September 4, 2012 by bribri988 2 Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
some of the best dogs i've owned or seen have been 'small', imo it's fairer to go by weight rather than height as a 22" stocky type can have more substance than a tall rangy 26". the smaller ( under 30lb's) types often have a wee bit extra oomph that the bigger more laid back types lack. pre ban i've had non ped whippets take roe and fox, and for my money it's a bigger deal for a dog to take quarry sometimes double their weight (ie 20 odd lb whippet taking a decent roe) than it is for a bigger more substantial type to simply overpower it's prey. having said all that my preference is for a 24 to 26" 40 to 50lb ish type as an all rounder maybe because the smaller types are using up much more of their resources to get a job done but come retirement (or 6 numbers on saturday) my wee bobbery pack will definately have a small non ped based lurcher or two.
