MikeTheDog 153
Might be the food you give it? Dry or BARF? As an example, flaked maize in dry food can cause skin irritation for some dogs.
Moll. 1,770
This might sound daft, but get it's anal glands emptied, do it every 2wks for a couple of months. After this time you should see the difference if it is the glands. An ex vet told me about this a while ago. It might not be the reason but is has been known to work for dogs who have itchy skin with no known cause (Not just itchy in one place either)
skycat 6,174
Could also be cheytiella: walking dandruff: its a type of mite that lives on the skin and is found a lot on wild rabbits. Worth getting it checked out by the vet: or simply use Frontline spray every two weeks for a couple of months: need to do the dog all over and make sure the spray gets right down to the skin. Trying to find the cause of many skin problems is a process of elimination. Start by worming and Frontlining the dog. Then try an elimination diet: feed only boiled rice and either white boiled fish or boiled chicken: do this for a month and see if there is any difference. As Mike said: some dogs are intolerant to maize, also wheat and soya which are commonly used to bulk out complete dog foods.

Sirius 1,391
It could be a number of things the list is endless I can assure you, I deal with skin problems daily in many dogs. People can be posting and guessing with will lead to a long thread, especially if you give little imformation. The skin is the largest organ of the body and this can make it quite hard to pin point the problem unless you have info. Also forget the shampoos, you are alwasy better in my experience to work from the inside opposed to the outside with the use of topical treatments unless for certain types of problem. But the best step to start with are: Feed a plain diet and in my experience as natural as possible, free of colourings, additives, high protein content and high cereal content. Plain white meats, rice and green veg is ideal (Persoanlly i would drop out any complete feed) Make sure the dog is sleeping in a cool place and is as dust free as possible. Good luck Edited September 3, 2012 by Sirius
TOPPER 1,809
i think youve answered it yourself --- to high a protien level ---- if i were you id cut out the complete and just feed it boiled rice with chicken or white fish for a few weeks iam sure you will see a vast improvement
