chartpolski 23,751
I like to think I'm not Breed, Type or Size Blind when it comes to running dogs, having owned most pures and crosses over the years, and at the moment have a 23" Terrier bred Lurcher and a 29" Longdog. Both do the job they were bred and brought in for, and both are a joy to watch at their respective trades, but it's nice to know they can do each others jobs, to a certain degree, when needed ! Cleanspade 3,322
Walking to my allottment, across a recently harrowed wheat field, there are a few rats knocking about. This morning one ran in front of us; Lima, the Deer X, was the first to react, picking it up, in her stride, in fine style, giving it a quick, but severe shake, and carrying it, somewhat disconcertainly, back to hand !! LOL !! No big deal, I hear you say, and you'd be right !! But it got me thinking about the posts I read on here about some dogs being to big for rabbits. Well, this bitch is 29" and has had many rabbits, day and night, and rats, although they are not her, or my, preferred quarry ! So my opinion on the "Big v Little" dog theory is; it's not the SIZE, but the DESIRE, of the dog, that dictates what it catches or doesn't ! The little bitch, Delta, also had one, but being 1/4 Beddy, I consider rabbits and rats to be her legitimate quarry. No pics, I'm afraid; not due to the recent hysteria about posting pics of quarry; but simply because I didn't have a camera ! Cheers. utter nonsense charp. smaller lurchers are better suited. end of. the legal quarry list is shrinking . no need for your big dogs now . go get a whippet beddy Link to post

Wouldn't give a Beddy/Whippet kennel room !! Waste of a good Whippet and a good Bedlington !! You are correct in saying the list of LEGAL quarry is shrinking..... but some of us Luddittes still cling to the hope there will be a Repeal !! And will keep the lines of good dogs just incase !! I, and my missus, marched, protested, bought the badges, etc, !! Still go to the Hunts, (was at the Border at Otterburn, on Boxing Day), but it won't stop me from hunting, even if I have to go abroad to do it !! The vast majority on sites like this have never realy HUNTED, they may take their dog out for a run, but the old days of hunting are rapidly reciding into the realms of history !! Cheers. 1 Link to post

Haggis81 147
I think a good wee dog is better than a good big dog on the rabbits. the differance for me is a big dog can turn its hand to a small dogs job and some can do it fairly well for their size but a small dog cant turn its hand as easily the other way! If your big dog is a good one it will make its own opertunites on big stuff but a smaller dog needs luck to pull it off. Edited August 30, 2012 by Haggis81 Link to post
