Guest Leveller
But would your dog stay there if you dropped a bacon sarny on the floor next it? I'd bet you'd have to shout it off then . Can't say I've ever found myslef out lamping with a bacon sarnie, it's hard enough holding all my dogs on leads and carrying 500 rabbits let alone worrying about a sarnie. 3 Quote Link to post
littlefish 585
Prey drive is always a question , does your dog lack it or have it in abundance, do you really need that much, if you do why not run pure greys they have it, but by law need to be muzzled for obvious reasons, intense prey drive can be a costly game vet bills public liability the list is endless, usually not making old bones. Now why is a guy taking stick because he wants a pure rabbiting dog, if you can recall your dog off quarry then well done, if thats a result of good training then fair play.So why are there so many unbelievers on this site, if my dogs are within 30 feet of me when something starts to run then i can call them off any more than that and selective deafness kicks in, prey drive and working ability [brains] should not be confused. YIS KIC. Greyhounds need to be muzzled by law ??? Are you sure ? I haven't heard of that law, and an awful lot of Greyhound owners up here must be breaking the law, if thats true Cheers. In Northern Ireland there is The Control of Greyhounds Act. It also says the rules involved apply to whippets and cross breeds as well . Quote Link to post

I don't know - I don't live in England but that's in the law here in Northern Ireland. Quote Link to post

Was referring to the irish law mate. As far as i am aware, there is no general law in england but have been told local bylaws may come into effect, dont know how true that is. Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,322
ive read this post with interest. ive re'read it. and thought about it. ive thought about it and thought back to my beardie and border collie lurchers i had years back and the terrier crosses ive owned. ive came to the conclusion that . my collie crosses did not lack prey drive. and pre ban proved this. on regular occasions. however they did learn much faster than my terrier lurchers. by dint of trial and error. if they hit a hedge or fence. by going in to hard they learned to check their pace a little . whilst my terrier crosses will smash through the hedge. not once or twice but every time. all your dogs will have prey drive. to differing degree's and this prey drive will in some of them be tempered with other things. like self preservation. this will also come in variable degree's. then you will have the fact that each and every dog will be an individual. do you fella's really think you can say that you can have the same control over all these variants and bring all these canines to the same level of control. my present lurcher cant be called off a feckin mouse or wasp. ive been trying to bring this dog to a decent level of obedience for years, but it will never happen. as it isnt possible to get this dog to do certain tasks. without breaking his spirit. 3 Quote Link to post

djs7547 104
This bitch is my rabbiting dog I got her soley to assist with the pest control so a dog that's mind is elsewhere and not focused on the job is of little use. I have a few shoots I go on and the Keepers are understandably quite wary of Lurchers (well dogs in general) especially when there is other game in the area or young birds still finding their feet so a properly well trained dog under control is an absolute must and if you can prove you have one it does open a whole lot of doors. This doe jumped up in front of us last night and I kept the lamp on it as it fled to the safety of the wood my bitch remained in front of me with a single command for the duration. Strange as it may sound it pleased me much that she listened to my command more than if she had run the thing in the darkness and pulled it down, apart from the obvious legal side of things lamping deer has never appealed to me anyway. I used to love the odd daytime run before the ban but those days are history now so for now it's Bunnies only. fair play to you mate thats not a thing my current mutts could do, but to be fair i have noticed on previous dogs iv had the older and more experienced they get, its as if they tend to realise whats within there capabilities, i.e. whats just to far, whats just gonna be a pointless run , especially if your dog knows the area and lay of the land to. cracking pic though Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
All i can add to this post is if had the patience and knowledge to train a dog to that level of obedience i would be realy proud of myself.. Quote Link to post
