bullx100% 681
Well just looking for abit off advice realy....I've just started shooting and was given a biakel 12g singel barrel full choke of a mate as a frst gun kind of thing (secretly I think he just wanted rid of the thing) now this is the first time out and couldn't help feeling abit stupid as the gun was prity much throuwing me around all over the place.we we're using no6 pigeon specials 30g is it because of the ammo I'm using or is it because I'm 5ft 9 n weigh asmuch as a wet tea bag.I want to get a hatsan escort 12g Semi or a 12g. S/S but if realisticly I carnt hanndel one then there's no point I want to enjoy when I go out shooting not feel like I've just had a fight with a car lol atb bx1 Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
Full choke makes these things kick more and I think your suspicions about your friends intent are correct. Try 28g loads instead and go for plastic wads rather than fibre if you can - they tend to kick less. Ideally, change the gun to something a bit better (almost anything lol) Quote Link to post

wilbert 6
Your weight should not matter if you are holding / mounting the gun correctly and have the correct stance. A semi auto will have much less kick as most of this energy goes into cycling the mecanisim to eject the spent cartridge and load the new one. A S/S will have more kick as they are much lighter and as a result you will feel more of the kick. What is the gun to be used for? If its for clays and you will be taking lots of shots then a heavy gun is a good option but if it is for walked up shooting then something light is best for carrying about as a 8 or 9lb gun weighs a ton after hours of walking about. Plenty of options for you which ever route you choose. Quote Link to post

The Seeker 3,048
Owing to your own admission of being a newbie I would suggest its just in experience with mounting the gun. When I first started my shoulder was black and blue but it was simply because I wasn't shouldering the gun properly. Now I don't even notice it, A semi auto will lessen the recoil but at 5' 9" I would expect a 12 bore of any type to be no problems ATB Quote Link to post
trenchfoot 4,243
Don't worry about the Baikal. They are short in the stock, and also have quite a lot of drop at heel. this leads to poor mount and a lot of muzzle flip. this results of which are a bruised cheek and sore shoulder. Being single barrel, it will also be fairly barrel light which will exacerbate this problem. lengthen the stock with a slip on pad and try a comb raiser to sort this issue out. The amount of choke a gun carries has a very limited impact on the level of recoil and compared with the other issues going on with the gun, boring the choke out will make feck all difference. If you do get a new gun make sure you get on that fits properly, or can be made to fit easily. save a lot of ball ache and money in the long run., Good look, Yorkie Quote Link to post
PLEDGEY 496
First shotgun i ever fired was a double barrel. Too much kick, didn't like it. Now have a semi auto and shooting is a joy. See if you can have a go on a semi, bet you'll love it. Some one at work said semi's are for girls, i say 8ollocks, i like the softness plus you get an extra shot :-) Quote Link to post

Semi auto will be great for what you need just make sure it doesn't give you a bad back as most owners seem unable to bend down and pick up their spent cartridges Quote Link to post
