whippet info

Recommended Posts

Im receiving a whippet on the 2nd of september. He's 15 month old and not done a single thing and as my current dog is out due to his broken hock which is healing and has two metal plates ever side of his break, ive got a season a head of me and thought it would be an idea to bring this dog on. im just looking for some advice of experience whippet handlers as its the first whippet ive ever owned.

i had mine from 7 wk old iv found him very hard to train i nearly gave up on him but now at 7months hes getting there iv only had him out watching other dogs ferreting and watching other dogs lamp. mine is very tall hes nearly 22". his mum was a kc reg about 17" and the sire was a non peg racing whippet. he reminds mge of a terrier hes vocal when playin with other dogs

i found him very stuborn i had always had bull breeds before and they have always clicked on fast. the dog looks very nice bud. mines a t**t round food and taking scraps from plates but it seems to have suddenly clicked and all the patents have seemed to have paied off. hes prey drive has gone through the roof. when mine used to meets strange dogs he used to act like a terrier snappy and vocal but have said it has paid off so roll on the start of the season so i can let him have a few runs

glad its paid of for you pal, my current lurcher was a fast learner and ive never thought about owning a whippet but heard what they lack in size they make up in heart and as long as a dog puts 100% in im a happy owner. can you put a pic up of your whippet mate

I had my whippet 4 years now and to be honest I found him the easiest to train, very fast learner incredible staminer and the heart of a lion. We' ve had him on the back of most game in all conditions and never a problem, I've also got a salxwhipp x whipxgrey and he has been a mare. The only problem I can see is with the age it's at it may not take to being knocked about, cold, wet. Was it a house dog or kennel mate. Atb with him it's a nice looking dog John

i think kennel dog mate, his previous owner was my uncle and he's gave me good feedback so ive got high hopes and i must say i do prefer raising a pup from 8 week old as theres no bond that compares when you go through the highs and lows of your dogs life. i must say im taking a risk in taking this dog because ive never thought about owning a whippet or an adult dog. im prapared to spend alot of time on the dog and try to achieve want i want out of him so im just trying to soak up as much info about them as i can ;)

some people rave about pure whippets a lad i know has one nearly three doesnt have it out a great deal and we went out on the lamp with his whippet and me da lurcher i was quietly impressed wouldnt jump however which is a no no for me and not the best recall but this is most likely due to time spent on the dog anyway i went and got a three quarter whippet quarter beddy after so that says it all for me if you put the time in mate you can shape the dog to how you want it

i need to build mine up i was told not to run them to much when young so hes just been goin on a daily walk and run for an hour aday. he was a pain to brake to ferrets. they defo have the heart of a lion, mine reminds me of a terrier in a running dogs body

he looks a stunner mate and as long as a dogs got a big heart i dont think you can really go wrong, i shall be doing alot of ferreting with mine so he MUST be broke to everything from ferrets to life stock and especially be well behaved around my young daughter. have you ran any long eared with him mate?
