freelance 448
Today was chicken friday, my mate goes to the abattoir for me and pics up boxes of chicken backs at £3 a box. Not sure of the exact weight of the box but there fairly heavy and you sure get your three quids worth. Along with the chicken we add raw veg and mince it all up, obviously throughout the season rabbits and all game get put through as well to give the runners a balanced and varied diet. The mincing room/dog/man shed LOL The boxes of chicken backs. Chopped up and going through the mincer with a few veg. Four boxes done. And in the freezer. Its a pocket friendly way of feeding the mutts, and you know whats going in them. I sometimes dont mince all the backs as i keep some back whole as i think it does there teeth good to crunch whole carcasses up as well. Cheers Atb

gnipper 6,531
The place I was getting my carcasses from has put the price up for a 12 kilo box to 5 quid , it was a quid when I first got them a few years back and they said they only charged for the packaging. I knew I shouldn't have told others about the place. I'm gonna go down the full chicken route next with culls from my mates farm but it will be a lot messier.

Are the chickens your butchering game types mate? If so eat one yourself and you'll taste the difference too. I was planning on skinning and halving them, take the guts out but try and leave the organs but it all depends what size the chicks get culled at really. He would do them as and when for me though. hutch6 550
I get 30Kg of chicken carcasses ( a few bags of wings out of them too) for £15. It's a nice drive over and I pass loads of farms etc so going to get some flyers printed upo and do some door knocking with lots of land changign hands that way recently. If you mince it up then the dog's teeth suffer as there is no cleaning going on and the mince can get stuck below the gum line easier meaning it's just as bad as kibble for destroying your dog's gob. It's not so bad if you are out in the field with the bags of mince etc but try and feed the backs whole as much as you can. You can mince the veg up as that helps to break it down so the dog can absorb what it needs easier.

He would do them as and when for me though. they are just normal hens, egg layers, spare cocks etc, but are more gamey in flavour as they free ranged and ate corn etc unlike broilers. but i dont understand why the game flavour would put her off. but saying that, she isnt too keen on rabbit unless she is very hungry. strange.
