True mate I always find the "trespassers will be raped" sign works as a pretty good deterrent

An old acquaintance of mine had been a naughty boy, he lived in the back of beyond with just a single track leading to the house. He kept a GSD on a chain by the gate and had no trouble with unwanted visitors. However, the day the plod decided he warranted a visit they could not get past the dog. So they called in the dog handler to deal with the dog, he took one look at the snarling slightly mental GSD, walked back to his van pulled out a fire extinguisher walked up to the dog and as the dog lunged at him he just squirted the fire extinguisher right in the dogs face, the dog immediately ran back into it's cuddy whimpering and more than slightly puzzled and there it stayed till they took it away as he was arrested with no bail.

I think you will find most breeds would act the same with that sprayed in there face. I know bloke who trains gsds bel mals for the army +raf he been on the telly , he picks pups for police work as well . He told me you might get the odd bull breed that will take discomfort +pain , but not all them will either .? He said a well bred gsd male of 80 odd lb will stop any man in most situations , he said he seen gsd cop dogs hit with iron bars ,knifed and still try lock on to people, when its kicked off with people. But he said nothing stops a bullet , and criminals will shoot a dog , they wont feck about with any dog no matter what the breed

The can be sprayed in the eyes ,or cattle prodded out of action ,then they are of no use,but even if they do bite you most probably get the pull off plod,

Just in this day of age they are a liability, for MOST people,if I lived in a remote rural area then maybe, but when you have a property where postmen ,neighbours, children ,knocking on the door,I'd rather leave it but if you feel you need one crack on

Strikes me there's a lot of folks on this thread haven't the first idea about proper manstoppers (and yard dogs rarely are)they take a LOT of work, time, dedication and responsibility and believe me a dog thats tested to the full will take more pressure than most could imagine that said they are not bullet proof but realistically who is going tooled up to steal your cur from its kennel,if the dog does its job its more likely to catch hep c from the smack head it bites than get a bullet.

definition of a yard dog comes across as some crazed frothing at the mouth man eater kept on a chain at the entrance to said yard,so easy to mallet it as someone put it,its totally restricted you could be within a foot or two and be totally safe to do the deed.

same animal running loose different story although as said theres usualy a way to deal with it.

up the security, locks cameras etc far less hastle imo,

Why buy a gsd to just bark?

I could get a little mutt terrier probably for free who'd do that, and I could take him out with the lurcher and he wont eat or shit as much and unless you pay good money for a well bred shepard he'll be a lot healthier.

Fair enough you cant be responsible for other peoples actions, but I have my terrier running loose in the yard and he'll yap and have a go at any strange adults (for all the use that would be),anyway about a year ago my neighbor took the fence down while I was out and his retard son started smacking the dog with a spade.

if he was a big nasty akita or rottie there could have been a dead child on my conscience.

have a big soft GSD dog here that looks like a nasty b*****d.. two neighbours have been robbed a hand full of times, my house hasnt been looked at... I wonder why?? because no ones gonna risk goin in with a big dog... aslong as it barks and stands its ground there not gonna test a big GSD... IMO
