andyfr1968 772
The Ratty's a low powered short range gun and an under rated one too IMO.10x on pretty much any sporting rifle is heading up towards the high end of things mag wise. A 4x scope on that type of rifle is more than enough and if most folks are honest with themselves 4x is more than adequate for most peoples field use. Airgun or otherwise. Just my opinion, mate, and I'm sorry if I sounded abrupt Edit to add.... Sorry to the OP for going rather off topic Edited August 13, 2012 by andyfr1968 Quote Link to post
Woodworm1972 24
It's ok andy It's just through experience of using this low powered gun that I found 10x mag at the discussed distances (20-30 yrds) far better for effectively killing vermin. Using the 4x 40 scope originally on the gun I found hitting the "kill zone" much much more difficult to hit, in no way gaurenteed :-(. With 4x mag hitting the animal was easy, but actually picking the area at range (30 yrds) that dispatches the creature quickly with the minimal amount of suffering was near impossible. Although low mag is perfect for low light situations and sub 25 yrds, which is the environment you would use the gun ie dimly lit barns Chris Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
From what you've said, Chris, I'd guess it's probably more down to the optics used rather than the magnification. The 4x40 which I guess was supplied on the gun won't have been exactly good quality glass. A shit scope is a shit scope, regardless of what numbers it's got written on it and a good low mag scope can be a very nice thing to use indeed. Quote Link to post

My young lad has the ratty to shoot both paper at 25yrds and knock downs upto 50yrds. His accuracy after changing to the 3-9x44 scope improved immensely, before all he could see was a black circle taking up two mill dots, but now he can actually see the lettering and each individual hole he's created, it's kind of gone from grouping of inches to centimetres now :-). I take no offence bud, I'm getting a chuckle from these posts anyways :-) Kind Regards Chris 1 Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
A good quality scope on 4x is good for hunting at 40 yards. even a poor quality one is better than iron sights.. Imo i got proper bad eyes tho lol so general hunting i use 6-8x and in barns 3or 4x when im plinking i like 10 -12x just so i can see the pellet holes from far away Quote Link to post
DavidTQ 3
The scope in question was Im pretty sure an aftermarket one, Trying to recall back to the guns purchase many years ago, I believe the original purchaser upgraded to the 4x40 from the standard scope, which was next to useless, I believe the silencer was an extra as well... My father in law who used to hunt rabbits with a live fire rifle and do clay pigeon shooting with a shotgun thought it was a nice scope, Ive got no base of experience from which to judge it. Whilst on the subject of scopes the shop Im getting my new gun from is doing a bundle deal (I guess they all do), is a hawke sport HD 6-9x40 likelly to be a useable tool for rabbiting upto 30 yards? I dont think Im going to need anything to fancy to start with, but dont want rubbish either. The rifle Im going for is a hatsan most likelly the 60s with a wooden stock. My understanding from reading around is that although its not a fashionable brand or as good as the high end kit, what it is supposed to be is a good serviceable tool at a good price for what you get.
