birddog 1,354
my mate got a reject (a 'fighter') years ago a bitch about 60lb that would take on anything, took foxes like a terrier takes rats, a demon on roe and great single handed on hares but very fiery and determined took some horrendous knocks, i moved away and i believe she broke her neck following a roe into woodland, i think if she'd been bred with something to temper that fire a little she'd have thrown ace pups. always fancied the idea of bringing one up from a pup as a lurcher maybe instill a little common sense but a lot depends on the nature of the ground Quote Link to post
BEARINATOR 2,869
bringing one up from a pup as a lurcher maybe instill a little common sense but a lot depends on the nature of the ground  True enough Quote Link to post

Guest born to run1083
Mentioned a few times on here of my dads, he spent big money on it as a sapling, not a track reject. He's ran it all over from flats in england to the mountains in wales. Copes just as well at either. Stamina on the dog is unreal. Real sensible mutt tbh jumps well. Only fault is after a very long run doesn't retrieve all way to hand stops 10ft short. Seems to have half decent recovery and unless my dad reminds you it's a grey most the time you just think your out with one of his lurchers. So far he's doing well but as we well know it's if he can maintain it over the years Quote Link to post
toshaugh 2
bringing one up from a pup as a lurcher maybe instill a little common sense but a lot depends on the nature of the ground  True enough Had 3,all x racer's, ignorant in the field, none would cross a ditch or fence or go through a gate, all pulled up at ditch while running rabbits, the last one done it for me, my terrier bolted a rabbit out of a break and I slipped, he ran up and whipped up the terrier, nearly killed her, he ran no more after that. Maybe as briddod says, bring them on from pups, but i'd never keep one in my kennel again. Quote Link to post

That is unlucky mate, I prefer getting them as pups and training them up for the field first, then putting them on the track as it gives them a bit more sense Quote Link to post
little jack 14
i grew up with track and extrack dogs, and always prefered watching them run in fields or on the beach. in my experience with ex track dogs you have trouble getting them to jump higher than the couch. but i have always wanted a gray from a pup to see what you can realy teach them. josh-waddingham 13
a mate baught one ferreting once, he worked at a racing kennels, the bitch werent to good with the ferrets and was easily out turned by the rabbits but with work i think one wouldnt be too bad, wouldnt be my cup of tea mine, folk put other breeds in there for a reason atb Quote Link to post
