Soft mate, real soft - Whippets are thin skinned buggers that feel the cold. Now't ya can do about it really, they got to want to go in first. Try throwing something they like to chase into the water, just not too far as YOU may have to retrieve it. Good luck.

i have a male laguna whippet 2 years old and he loves swimming whatever the weather we will swim for rats if he sees a rabbit across a river goes in the sea quite often and also retrieves alot so maybe start them at the bottom and see or take them with a other dog!

Dogs with thin skins and little or no subcutaneous fat are understandably wary of going into water that is below their body temperature, though pups of most breeds and types can be taught to enjoy a cool down in water providing they are accustomed to it during very hot weather. Sighthounds as a rule, aren't natural swimmers: body shape isn't ideal for swimming, and their deep chests mean that their heart and lungs are well below the water's surface where the water is a lot colder, even on calm lakes. Logical really that they don't like it too much.

While it's lovely and hot get in with them I swam with mine the other day, she loves water. Sometimes it's not down to the temp of the water more having confidence of the unknown.

I dont have whippets but - one of my two wouldnt swim, got up to his ankles in the water and it was a no go. kept throwing the ball in for him he would go out further and further, eventually would stand up to his neck in water but wouldnt swim. So i ended up getting a collar on him and walking out with him until he stopped - then i left him there and swam out, calling him.. waited and waiting then he eventually came swimming out to me. After that i couldnt keep him out of the water, he even got my other dog out swimming when he was a wee pup, now they've both no fear of water  Best of luck :victory:

It's the same with all dog's some will and some won't i don't belive it's got anything to do with the type of breed coat or water tempreture..simply some love it and some don't and they is not much you can do with a dog that does not like it..i don't know weather you are planning on it but never fling the dog in.. :D ..as every time you are near water and you shout them they will run the opposite way..

100% correct Millet - i had to learn that the hard way after i threw mine off a jetty. Thats why MoChara would only go up to his ankles ffs - so he made me pay for what i done after all .lol. I had to swim with him
