FUJI 17,327
I've followed a roe running along the road at 42mph for 300 yards atleast..i was flat out in an old Toyota Starlet Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
No doubt about it hare's are harder to catch through constant turning and wearing the dog out..deer can't turn so good so they need raw speed to reach saftey..i have had fast dog's that have only been straight lined from day time hare's once they are fooked from running..but these same dog's i have seen them straight lined from the start from the odd day time roe..so that is why i think a deer is the fastest uk mammal. paulus 26
ive seen some deer turn far better than a hare and use every obsticle it can to put the odds in its favour even seen them use the same tactic over and over to get that edge to enable escape, however ive seen hares that seem to taunt for the hell of it, only to get on a line at the point you thought it was a sure outcome, fold its ears flat and go into overdrive Quote Link to post
CallumDonohoe 65
i followed a young hare not even the size of a rabbit in the work van down a road a few month back and it was doing 27 mph zig zaging 10yards in front for a few hundred yards then slipped under the gate i was amazed Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
don't know whether it's because their wiser or better exercised but hare's that have been chased a couple of times are much harder to catch, theres a big difference between a green hare in a remote location to an educated hare on the outskirts of covilisation 3 Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
BBC Nature - Hare videos, news and facts atb I wouldn't trust any so called facts from this site or any other that doesn't offer any proof of their statements. They probably just quote someone who is quoting someone else who is............who is making a romantic guess. Next they will be telling you that peregrine falcons stoop at 200 miles an hour. I've seen a lot of hares coursed and in my opinion very few could straightline an average fit greyhound. I'm sure a lot will disagree with me but that's what I believe. Quote Link to post
Maximus Ferret 2,063
Just to add I mean few or none could do it at the beginning of a run. I know they can do it once the hound is tiring. I'm sure greyhounds top speed must have been accurately measured. Can the average hound reach 45 mph? I don't know myself but I bet someone on here does. Edited August 12, 2012 by Maximus Ferret Quote Link to post

birddog 1,354
it's not just the speed it's how long they last, the fastest greyhounds are sprinters 1 Quote Link to post
WILF 47,294
I know it's not answering the origional poster's question but i don't think the hare is the fastest uk animal..it may have load's of endurence and turning ability but in a straight line i would say some species of deer have quicker top end speed. so what is harder to catch a fallow deer or a hare Daytime Fallow..........at a guess.
