banner man 587
i think that the hares in kildare may be better hares to stay running but i think the hares around parts of galway are very tricky theres a lot of sheep wire with barbed wire on top it very dangerous you would need a fairly clever dog, il get you up this season shadow for a few days coursing, your dogs should do fine as its similar to your part of the country so im told Quote Link to post

South hams hunter 8,921
Well im from south Devon and the hares round here can only be ran on the lamp as the fields are to small with to many gates and runs, most dog after a season or 2 learn to scoop them up quick, ran hares in Norfolk with my dogs fitter then they have ever been and they didn't come close to one of them. Mate came down from Norfolk whose dogs pick them up there easy yet didn't come close down here well 2 different people. I think it all depends on what cross and where you run them. 1 Quote Link to post

Ya bud I definitely think that's a fair comment I've had dogs do very well down my country which is very hard to run them and I would have to hunt them for a few weeks in the big land to break them into it but they would do well then on them.and I've got dogs that I've seen running well in the big land that took longer to get used to a contrary place. But then u can get an exceptional one to do it anywhere on its day . 1 Quote Link to post

pikesta 54
Anywhere in they run regulary espically on sowed land. was just about to write the same thing, the more there ran the better they get. used to run alot round holbeach, (pre ban) and would meet a few lads running there dogs on the same land, the hares were hard to kill. Good Man 196
From my limited experience, i find the hares in the west of Ireland in small fields full of barbed wire, sheep wire, crazy gates, forrestry ect , a hard hare to kill with saluki saturated lurchers. I think a 1/4 saluki, or not more than half, seems better. However, their is the odd exception, as regards saluki saturated lurchers, some do learn to adapt i think and catch well, but, unless the saluki used is a fast type, forget it. I have never coursed in the east of Ireland, places like Kildare, louth, carlow ect, only coursed in meath and the hares their seem good, but the fields are a lot bigger, giving the dog a lot more chance. Just my experience on it. Quote Link to post
