Ideation 8,216
Puts stuff to ground. Marks. Doesn't kill ferrets. Holds netted rabbits. Catches bolters. Doesn't whine or make noise. Fairly steady. Anything else is a bonus. 3 Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
Didnt know that there defnition of a ferretting dog in the Oxford English Dictionary But each dog is very diffrent we can strive for certain traits but quite often certain dogs will just not ever be a dog that can be left to roam free over warrens . Some of my warrens are 500 holers and having two dogs held back to slip is far better than even two good ferreting dogs over the warren as they just cannot postion themselfs in the right place . ATB Cookie What a load of utter nonsense ... I will tell you what I will meet you at one of your 500 warrens and you can stand with your speed machine slip dogs and I will bring my ageing collie cross mongrel and another proper ferreting dog and we will go at it for an hour or so and for every rabbit mine catch you give me a tenner and for every one yours catch I will give you a tenner for .............. 6 Quote Link to post

Guest Leveller
Best you get you supply of caffeine ready then, cause somebody on the internet is wrong................. Even if I am wrong and I would be the first to appologise if I was proven to be and some of your warrens actualy genuinely do consist of 500 holes, your explanation of holding both the dogs back on leads because "having two dogs held back to slip is far better than even two good ferreting dogs over the warren as they just cannot postion themselfs in the right place" just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. One good ferreting dog will be in the right place most of the time because if it's in the wrong place too often it ain't a good ferreting dog is it?. 2 Quote Link to post
kanigra 110
Ferreting dog should- 1 Be broken to ferrets & livestock. 2 Mark buries. 3 Not disturb nets. 4 Retrieve. 5 Hold netted rabbits. 6 Catch bolters. 7 Be able to work the bury freely. Thats a ferreting dog in my opinion. 1 Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
let the dog suss stuff out for itself and let it use its own instincts, don,t hinder the dog 4 Quote Link to post

Think your getting me mixed up with someone else.... I have a GOOD ferreting dog, and one I slip occasionally... That would meet YOUR expectation... I have never said I hold two dogs back... I have one I occasionally take ferreting, despite your concerns for ruining the name of the sport..and will continue to do so... I have never said any of my warrens have 500 holes... foxdigger13 114
Ive done Afew big 100-200 hole, DEEP warrens, and as Chalky says they are a right barsterd to get the bunnies out of, especially when your only using the 2 ferrets lol, Cheers. Quote Link to post
Fat-Ferret 857
My antique is getting a little too old now for the BIGGIES...So we tend to stick to the smaller stuff and enjoy the craic... Quote Link to post

ATB Cookie Are you saying your dogs can't position themselves in the right place. If so I wouldn't hold out much hope for them beating Teagan and partner. Mick C. 229
If they are big but shallow you can make progress. If they are deep it can be slow and painful . Never count the holes but have run out of nets on one or two ocassions. Never seen 500 hole bury If i did think i would change method of capture Quote Link to post
derbylad1 293
If you holding a dog on the lead, it must be a right pain in the arse holding the dog back when you have other stuff to get on with. resetting nets, entering ferrets, picking up netted rabbits, etc etc...oh and drinking ya brew Quote Link to post
Qbgrey 4,119
for me the dog must be loose,a dog will mark, hold netted rabbits if im on my own and dealing with another, chase and hopefully catch escapees, and the most important is a dogs hearing, they can hear what and weres going on underground and often snap a rabbit out of a leaf covereed pop/bolt hole before the rabbits off and out.
