out tonight with dog and pup

Recommended Posts

rights guys, am just home there we were away out with the dog and my wee bitch, went for a dander to this place i know thats' full of all game! we didnt really want to go out tonight as it was too calm but decided to take the pup, so we grabbed dogs and headed out. we were walking along this path, place full of rabbits, few slips but no luck. on up abit there was a rabbit sitting squatting walked within 10 metres of it before it bolted, slipped the dog it turned the rabbit a few times then bang! 1st rabbit in the bag, about 40-50metres on up the path another squatter, again i slipped the dog and he was behind the rabbit in seconds few turns the rabbit ran back towards us but the dog done well turning it then caught, the rabbit squealing i ran over and took the dog of it, the rabbit tried to run but just as i took him of it my wee bitch banged the rabbit killed it. further on up the path more rabbits bouncing about dog slipped caught up on one then the rabbit turned back towards us, it ran up and down the hedge with the dog close on its heels again the dog caught it and the rabbit was squealling, we ran over and took the dog of and let the bitch kill it. not a bad night for an hour dander with the dog and my 4month bitch.. i will upload a vid of her when i can figure out how too!!!

A 4 month old bitch :wallbash:. I'm not going to waste my time explaining how you'll fu*k the dog up as it's obvious you havn't got a clue. Let it be a pup ffs theres plenty of time to get it catching from 9-10 months old.

serious like? i took the pup out with the other dog, i wasnt really planning on letting her do it, but what harm has it done? anytime i take her out ferreting with me shes on her back legs dieing to get at them. i was planning on letting her check them out up close, but the dog didnt kill them, and she happened to grab it from being on the lead which stopped it from running away, im not going to ruin her by doing that like do whats the problem?

even having her out that young may warrant bad habits such as yapping through frustration........................................which could later lead her to do it when shes coursing when shes old enough...............................show her skins etc ................................they dont need to be out that young , she should be doing what pups do ......................playing and developing learning new skills........give her the start she deserves and let her be a pup , because if you ruin her she will get passed on all her life which is no fault of her own..........

no one knows everything about dogs and only a fool will tell you different..............good luck

i was under th impression you was letting her kill them perhaps i miss read it. theres nothing wrong with taking her out at that age what so ever, keep that bit up mate.. imo it helps produce a better dog in the long run. i take my pups out with me on hunting trips as soon as they have had there jabs at 8 weeks old

Each to there own, But what do you lads do about the basic training before taking the pup out in the field with other dogs? Then there's stock training etc. No wonder there's so many 9-12 month old lurchers for sale on gumtree thats all i say...

Aye better then sitting in a kennel, my collie/grey was out from 6 months no harm done to her let her self enter so to speak. By 6 months had amazing recall, cracking retrieve, stock trained, natural jumper. Would sit on command, stay on command how much more basic training do you need. Even knew the lamp before took her out on actual rabbits by using skins on park and chucking them on the lamp and getting to retrieve, Just got to be very sensible and don't put the dog in situation to fail. Confidence confidence and more confidence. first time I've ever started at that age. But year ago round here the was no where to walk her without seeing quarry really unless wanted to keep her out the fields so thought I'd take her out where I could put the odds more in her favour. For this bitch best thing I could of done for my circumstances

I guess it all depends on whether you just want a dog that can catch and kill, or one that is well trained, retrieves and does what you ask of it in any situation. But I'd never take a pup out lamping with another dog: recipe for all sorts of problems.

Must be honest I was a little scepticle on these lads starting there dogs off younger but after starting mine off few month sooner I see why they do it. My bitch has been out with a few well respected dogs off here at like 10 months old onwards an safe to say has held her own. No world beater but for 2 is filling the pot nicely I think when then say putting an old head on young shoulders is exactly right. But your def right get it wrong and well simple you've fecked it lol

not going to go into when to start a dog working,a friend of mine also let his dogs at a young age rag and kill rabbitts.

which i dont think made them any keener. it just made his catch nothing but ferret fodder.

if you end up with a hard mouthed dog so be it, but i would always try and get a clean retrieve first.

but then i like rabbit as much as dogs and ferrets.
