believe it or not i have caught two muntjac with just my hands by running them into the pigmesh fence darking like a dog there legs just go to jelly then i lept on them no sport at all just bloody pests round here!! but some people are paying £1000 to stalk 1 mugs lol

I've seen an experienced dog ripped wide open on them and last season a guy ran to help his Bull X out on one and ended up going to A&E with his arm and wrist ripped to the bone.

Wish it was still legal, because there great eating. And yes them tusks can corse some damage. Hard to catch in woodland but dont stand much of a chance in open, so ive heard.

The relative few I've caught, back in the day, offered no problem to my dogs but i've seen were dogs have been injured.

 

Munties are the one quarry i'd have really liked to have done a bit more on truth be told....

One of the most enjoyable ways of hunting muntjac IMHO is a good scrubby woodland a a couple of terriers and a good keen sturdy lurcher that knows where to stand. The noise issue is one of the main reason I used to like hunting them in woodland in the day but sometimes it made it hard to pinpoint where the dog was. Had a few vet bills due to them often cutting very deep into the muscle but the good dogs usually find a way of subduing them with out too much fuss. There a lot more common then roe now in my local mooching spot but luckily bieng small deer you can fit a few in the boot and there venison is usually very welcome by friends and associates unlike fallow.

 

I used to do quite abit on the muntjac as there quite common around here and farmers are sick of them. One thing I've allways wandered is they must be hindrance to a keen foxing/rabbiting man as some seasons they seem to be in most bits of cover that are big enough to hide them. I would like to see how hound types get on alongside a good steady lurcher so if any of youse lads out there would like to try your hound bushing types on them flushing to the gun in the south drop me a pm.

Never tried munty but like any fine food I would imagine you have to savour it, not f***ing inhale it tomo.........

cwd tastes a bit like beef with a slightly lighter taste.muntjack is a very strong tasteing meat the same deep red colour of a old hare .very rich strong meat .cwd when cooked very slowly is a very tender meat.muntjack is more fibrous and not as delicous as cwd

I find them the best eating and usualy when a dog has had a cut knock of them they then revert to shaking rather than grabbing like they would with a fox in the open they are easy enough to catch but you do get the odd one who will give a dog a good run in cover they are a different prospect most spots this way have got plenty of them and they are now considered a pest in most places down here pity you cannot do them anymore where good sport and what I did not eat feed the dogs

Iv never seen one first hand just few picture's, I can imagine them being good bit sport with a pack of terriers in the cover

This is going to make me sound like the biggest bull shiter out but anyhow i know it’s true, just before the ban i used to drive around our farm if i saw a muntjac i would get close then open the truck door and release the dog, well the dog got quite good at this and yes not very sporting i know i was young!! anyway one morning i open the farm gate by the road and half way up the track stood a little foocker seeing some beer money coming my way i let the mutt go, blue got on terms and made the deer turn 180 now heading down the track at me, thinking i was the deer catcher by hand lol i made the plan to rugby tackle it i missed it, the deer got past ran across the road missed a car with dog behind the car hit blue just clipped him knocked him over i thought that's him done but he gets up and gives chase again this time heading across next doors farm who does not like any form of hunting, his field runs along the A41 so everyone can see deer gunning for it with dog closing in fast, a quick am sorry mate to the driver who stopped i get in my truck head down to the next gate way in his field praying no one from the farm has seen they hadn't but a 7 tonner full of traveller’s had and pulled up shouting and cheering the dog on, blue held the deer down and what’s seemed like ages i get to them both, the deer was mulled but not dead so i can’t let it go farm pen knife out and job done deer over my shoulders and running for the truck, as i get to the truck the travellers pull up alongside and shout out that was top crack lol thinking quick i chuck the deer in the back of their motor thinking i won’t be caught with it saying you can have this. i put the dog in the car and did one all day i waited for next door to ring up but i got away with it i laugh at it now but i didn’t find it funny at the time lol and i bet the driver of that car filled his pants too!! I am bracing myself for the comments!
