You can loose any working dog, some more prone to it than others, breed means nothing, truth is some we like more than others that wont protect them, get on and move on lifes too short to dwell on the past, but that wont stop you remembering it, good luck with the decission

mine done her self in back in September last year. was few days shy of 19month. snapped neck on a walk ..

got 2 in now for when one kills its self.. you'l feel guilty for a week or 2.. i felt like shooting the pup because it, but theres nowt you could do to bring it back so get one in and crack on. Don't get attached to this sort of dog

why not replace it with a litter brother or sister if at all possible, ask the breeder of the dog you lost if he intends a repeat breeding and wait till he does, just a thought.i lost a fine young dog a while back, broke his 2 front legs right in front of me.I PTS myself, now THATS a sickner but you need to get over it and pick yerself up again.Shite happens deano

The first cut is the deepest, but once you've lost a few to accidents it does get easier, if only a little. We have to balance our love for running dogs, our need to hunt and their desire to do what they were bred for with the knowledge that a dog is only safe when its on the lead. I lost 4 promising young dogs in the space of 4 years, a long time ago. I got paranoid for a while, but it passes, and who knows, your next dog could go all its life without doing any serious damage to itself. It is fate, or whatever you want to call it: only you can decide if you are willing to chance fate being on yours (or rather, the dog's side) with the next pup you get.

But don't keep just one dog: if you have two then at least you are still left with one if the worst does happen. That's the way I see it at any rate.

Alternatively, get a lurcher with a lower prey drive, and more sense of self preservation, something less leggy and fast: first cross Collie Greys are generally pretty good at keeping themselves out of trouble: generally!
