keepitcovert 842
Ever been asked that question, funny how a lot of guys that hunt when asked that question seem to get embarrased or start making excuses all depending on what company their talking to, why not nail your colours to the post. A couple of seasons ago i was out ferreting on some land that borders about 8 houses well out in the sticks, anyway had the longnet out and was just setting some purse nets when i glanced round to see a woman and a lad about 15 with her. Straight away i recognised her she runs a stall on the local market selling christian books and other jesus memorabilia shit i thought raving bloody anti just what i need. What you doing she asked, rabbiting i replied, oh do you mind if we watch she said, no i replied but be quiet, anyway collared the ferrets down they went and a couple of minutes later one in the net the dog pinned it i went and dispatched it the woman seemed fascinated that the dog took the rabbit but was totally indifferent to the ferrets, training i said, before long one came out of a pop hole and she saw the dogs course it catch it and retreive. Now her interest really came to the fore asking how the locater worked did it take long to train the dogs how did the nets work, and finally do you do this as a job, no i replied i do this as pest control but the main reason i do it is because i bloody well enjoy hunting. Postscript a couple of days ago i bumped into her lad and he asked me if i was up that way again would i like to see his ferrets, just proves you can convert the unconvertible. J.DOG 1,355
I hunt because of my great grandad When I was 7 yrs old I started going to his house for the weekend , he was one of those old time hunters , you know the ones , the ones you seen with scruffy looking lurchers in tow , pipe in his mouth snd flat cap on his head I'd go on the Friday night and he would take me out lamping with his what I now think was a beddy whippet I got hooked , then on the Saturday morn I'd go ferreting with him he would wake me up nice and early hed tell me to go out and get the ferrets ready , so I did , we'd be out hours catching a huge bag of rabbits , on the way home he'd stop by his mate house and drop afew rabbits off for him, we'd go home and he'd show me how to gut/skin rabbits, we'd then go into his house and sit by the fire having our tea I still remember the wee lurcher curled up by the fire at my great grandads feet such a loyal animal, then on the Sunday we'd go out to the allotments and I'd help out what fun I had all those years I kept going to his , I went from age 7 till when he passed away when I was 12 I stopped going hunting after he died ,no one to go with, hunting reminded me of him , and I couldn't go without him I then stated going hunting again aged 14 and got myself a pup I'm now only 16 but feel I've learned alot from my great grandad over the years he taught me how to train lurchers how to hunt correctly and he taught me to respect the quarry I hunt and taught me how things should be done I owe alot to him and I feel he's taught me something that I can enjoy hopefully for years to come . 9 Quote Link to post

bird 9,889
well to be honest, i only got into hunting by chance . Ive been into bull breeds well before lurchers, as a kid we had staffs, which were like pits of today, and heinz 57's lol. was out 1 day with bullmastiff bitch, saw what thought was greyhound, jumping fences and chasing a rabbit in a field by me. Spoke to the bloke and said you dont see many greyhounds doing that, he said its not a greyhound its a lurcher, its a collie grey x salui grey. The dog was smooth+brindle, and i used to meet him few times on the walk . And i thought i would like a lurcher as my next dog , and that was 25 years ago, so thats how i got in to these type of dogs for hunting. 1 Quote Link to post
