i am wondering if the real reason is; they had no food to give the dog! so made up some excuse!!

Indeed. If I had no food for my dogs, they would be getting half of mine.

just half? u selfish sod lol

Aye - half between the three of them. I hate to see a fat dog ;) .

Not for me that cant see the benifit of making an animal go without food for 48 hour's every week and it is 48 hour's not 1 day if you feed friday at 7pm miss saturday at 7pm and feed sunday at 7pm th

dogs fed once a day do a 24hr fast 7 days a week

If you feed hounds the day before hunting there very sluggish compared to when there feed is missed, there certainly much sharper. I don't know of any kennels that feed the day before unless there a small pack that hunt the same hounds 3-4 days a week when missing is just not a option.. Hounds will do 20/30/40 miles on a day out & if it had ANY sort of negative effect on them either in there stamina, ability to hunt or in there general wellbeing it wouldn't be done, as any one that works around them will know with out a pack in absolute peak condition you have nothing..

i agree with that, hunger produces an urgency in the canine and a sharpness , a hungry dog is easier worked with and trained,

there are a lot of good traits that piggyback on the back of that feeling of tension caused by hunger, not saying not to feed your mutt or how to feed him but definitely it makes a difference to how a dog approaches work, its up to each individual how they look after their charges though,

If i can remember correctly i read this in one of my ferreting books i will try and find it and quote it on here i have a funny feeling it was in Jackie drakefords book? It says something along the line of leaving the ferrets one day without food a week is a perfectly natural thing to do as it is good for their digestive systems and also brings them back to their basic natural instinct that they may not be able to hunt and kill each day? Somethings along those lines but im not entirely sure about dogs. Me personally the only time i have a miss feed is because of me and only me forgetting or being too busy. But 98% of the time she is fed everyday on time

Thanks

How can you forget to feed your dogs

Fasting is a good way to lose weight but when a dog is working hard the last thing it needs is losing muscle and with weight loss come muscle loss. When the body runs low on energy stores its uses it own muscle as well as the reduced stores of energy as fuel.

I feed in the morning so they run that eve with full stores and empty stomachs. If the sessions is to last more than a few hours I also give a few little chunks of feed as the night goes on to keep the system well supplied.

I fast one of my dogs every so offen, say once every 2 or 3 weeks, as he is such a fussy eater. I find this brings his appetite back a bit and he will feed better. I've never had such a poor eater, even tripe and raw beef strips get left in his bowl.
