birddog 1,354
what started as a wee bit of local banter has raised the question.....should our dogs jump or not? the old adage hjkc would suggest yes, docherty in his book says no jumping no hares, i know some lampers discourage it, i've seen dogs come a cropper either way but on balance i'm a fan are you? a few pics from this morning 5 Quote Link to post

birddog 1,354
Obviously a dog should jump for gates and fences ect. But want i think birddog is getting at is, should a lurcher jump while chasing quarry ? no, some folk think teaching a dog to jump can lead to trouble.....ie a lamping dog jumping into the unknown in the dark......i've had a dog hot on quarry that turned as the dog jumped, poor ben tried to turn mid jump and landed on the barbed wire...........if he hadn't been taught to jump the accident wouldn't have happened.....i've seen a deglove injury on a whippet that was a non jumper but it's high prey drive made it try and dive through a fence after a rabbit.......to jump or not that is the question? Millet 4,497
It's essential to have them jumping and it is part of the training of a working lurcher..i do prefer them to go under when possible but they still need to jump when you want them too. Quote Link to post
storm323 191
Jump 100% I like to teach my pups to jump a little bit older don't see the advantage of teaching young pups jumping more things can go wrong with getting hurt I think . Quote Link to post
BORDERSCOT 3,816
They've got to jump an absoloute must. Around here you'd never be done lifting and lowering if your dog couldn't jump. Easiest thing in the world to teach. I'm never in too much of a hurry to teach a pup to jump though - especially with big heavy types. Young pasterns, fetlocks, wrists or whatever can easily be damaged by starting too young. I've no need for a 6 month old pup to be jumping five bar gates and I wince when folk constantly fire young growing dogs up and over obstacles like a kinda party trick!!!!!! 2 Quote Link to post
