redtailhawk1 84 Posted August 4, 2012 Report Share Posted August 4, 2012 The key is fitness. Don't be too keen to drop its weight or drop it too quickly. Never steal its food. You will not be disapointed with a red, but need to put the time in on manning and flying. Is it a male or female? Quote Link to post
daz280597 4 Posted August 4, 2012 Author Report Share Posted August 4, 2012 It's a male pal he real starch sits on glove mint to him for a good walk round the fields today round sheep cows and in the farm yard to get used to all things around and then comes in a night and watchs bit of tele really made up with his progress . He will treat you the way you treat him and by the sound of it you will have a good bird. As soon as you get him flying free get as much quarry under him as you can or he will get frustrated. jasper65 6 Posted August 5, 2012 Report Share Posted August 5, 2012 here was my fella first year 1989, I was a bit of a jack the lad back then but always put my birds first... totaly agree with what Redtailhawk1 put above!! these birds will crash in headlong making you think is the bird still alive at the end of it, they'll also take on huge slips when fit over great distances and certainly very gamey ... Its great to see them make a comeback, when I had mine the bird of the moment was the Harrishawk but I loved my redtail for the sport and fun I had with him, fond memories of a great hawk..... My female was my first bird and would not change her for the world. If I could only have one it would be a red. I gave my falcon to my friend to do displays with. Mark White 25 Posted August 10, 2012 Report Share Posted August 10, 2012 total agree with the above comments but i will say again dont drop the weight to quick i made that mistake they dont respond well in the warm weather or if they are not fit enough i dropped my female to 2lb 5oz yes she did respond but was crap and screamed from that day on i put her weight back up by another 2oz and she flew at every thing but did not catch or do any long chases it was not until the following season that i found i was flying her well under weight she is now flying at 3lb+ depending on the weather that what happens when you take bad advice. she flies at every thing now from frogs to muntjac and even took a pigeon on the wing I fly mine 6 days a week for 3 hours a day so mine is very fit. good luck do it right and you wont need another bird Quote Link to post
lady-hunter07 15 Posted August 12, 2012 Report Share Posted August 12, 2012 Not had much experience with red tails but martin has and the main thing i have notice with them is once they are flying free and killing, you have to be part of the team, if you epect them to do all the work they will soon let you know. Some people class these birds as aggresive towards people but they arent, they just dont wont have the p##s taken out of them. Be a team player and you will have a fearless hunting companion for years to come. Quote Link to post
