Your opinion of a good dog

Just a quick question really

 

What would your opinion of a good dog be?

 

Mine personally i own a bull grey x saluki grey and she may not be a world beater but she gives 110% each and everytime and that is all i want. I have been out lamping with other local lads with really racey dogs that look like speed machines but my bitch has out ran and out caught alot of them. She is by no means the fastest dog in the world but she is willing to go that extra mile to ensure a catch and this to me is more important than speed alone. Just my honest opinion.

Too true i just think that some lads think speed is all there is and not a lurcher that can read and determine the games movements.

Very true. My bitch is fairly bulky and doesn't look that fast but she is like a bullet. She is faster than alot of racier dogs and has no trouble keeping with a strong rabbit on a golf course straight and picking it up on the overtake.

My opinion on a good dog is an Alauant X grey X Bull X Grey weighing 150lb and 22in TTS ..i have one here it can't catch jack shit but it is hard as fook with other dog's and can even coarse pig's for 3min's on the lamp..

i like a dog that can get you both something to eat, no nets , no ferrets, no gun, but if there is bunnys about it will find and catch one.

As long as the dog makes me happy I'm happy but a couple have sen my dog go and he is no world beater but does the job .....there is 1 dog I go out with which does not look fast but after 50yards would leave my 3/4 behind for fun and hes not slow but as long as your own dog pleases you that's all that counts atb

Suits me and not every tit on here as they seem to think it should! A dog only has to please it's owner and NOT every f****r else..enjoy what you have and don't worry what others have or say!

a good dog is a dog you can enjoy the nights lamping with or the days hunting with if the dog is in your opinion a godun for you and does what makes you happy then its good one for you and thats al that matters not everyones idea of a goodun is going to be the same it takes allsorts atb for the season pall

i went for a 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy, but i have growen up and watched umtean on and it all depends some are fast,good turners,able to read the rabbit,excellent strikers depends on the dog a lad i spoke to the other week asked me what dog i had i told him a beddy he said pre ban of course hed seen one run hare against a saluki/collie/grey and first 100 meters it was fantastic but after that it was embarrassing to watch as i said my main quarry was rabbits for me i got a dog that was 100-200 meters merchant but depends on land and what cross suits yourself.

one that pleases you at the work you do with it.it is only your opinion that matters really. different people have different standards and vary with the amount of work they give the dog. just be honest with yourself .

A dog that i really get on with and have a strong bond with, a dog that becomes your best mate. And a dog that if there is game there, no matter how far away, or how well hidden, will find it and put it up and give a good account of itself in catching it.

I couldnt agree more there mate. The bitch i have now is my best friend and i have more trust in her than i do in most humans! When hunting we seem to think the same and both know what the other one is thinking. If im hunting with her and she doesnt catch i know she has done everything in her power to ensure she brings something back, if she doesnt at least she gives her all that to me is what makes a good dog.
