Gaz_1989 9,539
Ive always aspired to own an all round lurcher. Obviously for taking abroad with me and doing various game, just rabbits and rats over here But what is an all rounder to you? To me its a dog that has decent obedience, will walk off lead to heal, basic recall, retrieve and have a go at jumping most things, does rabbit night after night, consistently and is good at them, just as happy lamping as marking a ferret set and more than willing to retrieve the odd shot pheasant or woodpigeon. If a hare gets up it will take it, wether on the lamp or daytime, field big or small, it wont be knackered after that hare, it could do another, it could take another 5 rabbits. If charlie gets up then again it will take it, and another if need be. Same for bambi. If some lads asked you to go out specifically foxing, as a one off, on the lamp, and you needed your dog to do 4 or 5 then it would but then if it needs a rest for a few days thats fine aswell. Same for long ears, if i was invited coursing then the dog would be expected to put up a good show, not nesescarily the best dog there but good enough to warrant an invite back. This to me is what i want out of a dog, not nesescarily this one, i might never get it. But they are out there. I read the other day where someone was saying all rounders never exist, no dog capable of doing 5/5 long ear on the fens could do 5 charlie night after night. Probably true, but to do 5/5 on fens or 5 charlie 6 nights a week you arent talking all rounder, you are talking specialised dog. What are other peoples views? Cheers Gaz 1 Quote Link to post
Carraghs Gem 1,675
To me an alrounder would be a dog that works well day and night on all quarry... Not necessarily large bags, and also be usefull when your ferreting, and have reasonable obedience Wouldnt be too worried what other folk think as long as the dog suits its owner Quote Link to post
